COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict College senior shortstop
Cecelia Lykes has been named to the Capital One Division II Academic All-America® Softball Team, becoming the first student-athlete in Benedict College history to earn this distinction.
Lykes was named to the third team and was one of 33 players named to the Division II Academic All-America® team. Lykes was one of two representatives from the SIAC to earn All-American honors. Spring Hill pitcher Caroline Sagrera was named to the first team.
A senior shortstop, Lykes was third on the team with a .370 batting average with a team-high 12 doubles. She is a criminal justice major with a perfect 4.0 GPA and received the prestigious Jimmy Green Memorial Inspirational Award at the Benedict Athletic Banquet.
The teams are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
