To start off, I give this book 4 of 5 stars.

The strange city of Wren, run by bigots and the morally backward. The main character Kincaid's gay twin brother Xander is murdered. Kincaid returns to Wren to figure out who killed his brother as well as comfort his mother. This is the general premise to the book.

In the beginning(as usual) I was skeptical that this would be a good read. I didn't care too much for the constant political jargon in the beginning but once I got deeper into the book I realize it did in fact help explain how the main character felt about the town.

The general flow of the book was good. There were some parts that I really didn't like. For instance, how the main character keeps getting drunk in the beginning/middle when he explains how much he wants revenge/justice. He kind of works against himself, which I understand is probably on purpose. I just didn't really like those parts the best.

Also, the explanation from a certain angel of a higher being I didn't really enjoy but all in all it's open to interpretation so I can't really count too harshly against that.

About halfway through the book I found myself depressed by the constant downer that the main character was until something really exciting happens and the book takes a scifi edge to it. I wouldn't say STRONG scifi, but scifi nonetheless.

After this shift in the story, Kincaid's determination to conclude this terrible chapter comes to fruition as he learns about the true secrets of his own hometown. The twisted lies that surround him and the things that hide in the dark.

Please also note, that there are gay sex scenes! And great ones at that. I really did enjoy these but won't obsess over those details. Just know that it's there and it's well written.

I really liked the surprise that the character Angelo brought along. At first, I thought he was a typical jock jerky character but he actually progressed into a sweet loving guy. I even thought his mother Mary Anne was a little obnoxious at first but she kind of turns out to be a great supporting character.

I think the ending was a little abrupt, but still it fit for the story and was a good ending.

All in all, the writing had a good flow, the characters progressed well over the course of the novel, and I really did enjoy the unique scifi edge that Joshua Skye gave to his novel. Give it a read!
