Since July, the number of trucks dumping garbage daily has come down from around 400 to 200

The communities around Mandur have been keeping a night vigil ever since BBMP agreed to stop dumping garbage at the landfill from December 1.

A team of 150 villagers is keeping watch on the number of trucks dumping garbage in the landfill as the BBMP had promised to scale down the number by 50 every month.

“The group has the keys to the landfill. We are letting in only 200 trucks. After the agreed number of trucks dump garbage, the gates are locked. They are opened only the next night,” Gopal Rao, a community leader, told The Hindu . “Before the deadline was announced in July, around 400 trucks dumped garbage every day. Now, the number is 200.” Mr. Rao said that this way, the community is not just monitoring the quantum of waste being dumped in the landfill, but also keeping up the pressure on the BBMP. “We do not trust the BBMP. We count the trucks every day to only ensure that the civic body is forced to adhere to the agreement,” he said and added that dumping would not be allowed at any cost after December 1.
