BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Samford scored three times after halftime to offset a goal by Lea Raedle in the first half in a 3-1 victory over The Citadel in a Southern Conference women's soccer contest on Friday night.

The loss means the Bulldogs (5-13, 1-7) will be on the road for the opening round of the SoCon Tournament on Wednesday, with their opponent to be determined after the regular season finale on Sunday at Chattanooga.

The seventh and eighth seeds host first-round contests while the top six seeds get byes. The Citadel can still catch VMI for eighth place, but the Keydets hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a 3-2 win in Charleston on Sept. 26.

Raedle gave The Citadel a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when she scored her fifth goal of the season, assisted by Montana Hinson. Raedle broke a tie with Mady Riegel for second on the team in goals, two behind leader Vanessa Aponte.

Sam Millspaugh took over in goal in the 20th minute after Naomi Carter left with an injury and made three saves the remainder of the half to keep The Citadel in front at intermission. But Samford came out aggressively in the second half and eventually broke through against the Bulldog defense.

The host Bulldogs had five shots and took four corner kicks in the opening eight minutes of the second half, but Millspaugh was equal to the task with three saves. However, on its sixth shot of the half in the 54th minute, Samford tied it at one on a goal by Jermaine Seoposenwe.

Samford kept the pressure on and nine minutes later took its first lead of the game on a goal by Ariane Lukens off a corner kick. Amanda Abbott added an insurance goal with 22 minutes left in the contest.

Samford finished with 22 shots and 14 on goal including 14 and 10, respectively, in the second half. Millspaugh finished with nine saves in 70 minutes of action in her first playing time of the season, while Samford goalkeeper Anna Maddox made three saves.

The Citadel finished with five shots, including three by Raedle, and four on goal. Samford also took 11 corners to two for the Bulldogs.
