HUMBOLDT PARK — A designer known for her meticulously crafted, custom gowns popular among brides looking for vintage style will be hosting her first sample sale this weekend, which is good news for anyone under a size 6.
"I have a lot of women come in who want to buy one off the rack so I thought, why not? So everything is available and I'll sell accessories, too," designer Veronica Sheaffer told Racked.com.
While a custom handmade gown can cost up to $6,000, Sheaffer wrote on her blog that the selection of off-the-rack gowns from past collections will be "seriously discounted" at the upcoming sale, scheduled for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The gowns, which were designed for models, are all size 4 but could flatter a size 6, Sheaffer said.
Sheaffer said dimensions for a size 4 are a 34-inch bust, a 26-inch waist and 36-inch hips.
"But there is a lot of extra fabric in seams, so I don’t want to deter someone with a 28-inch waist, for instance. And most of the gowns have fuller skirts," Sheaffer said.
Sheaffer said prices for the sample sale dresses will be between $500 and $3,000, with cocktail dresses on the lower end and gowns starting at $1,200.
The sale will also include headpieces, veils and sashes, too.
Sheaffer's studio is at 2409 W. Hirsch St. in Humboldt Park, just west of Wicker Park.
