Hey, the Lobos Were Jonesing for A Win

September 20, 2014

Yes, the Levelland Lobos were jonsing for the their first win of 2014 and behind four Gerber to Jones touchdown hook ups, the Levelland Lobos improved to one-and-three on the year with a 48-to-26 win over the Brownfield Cubs.

Lots of things went well for the Lobos.

For starters, the bus trip to the game was measured by blocks rather than miles.  After opening with their first three on the road, old Lobo Stadium was a welcome sight for the weary road warriors.

The Lobos got off on the right foot and really stayed on it all night long.

Brownfield would take their first possession deep into Lobo territory before a penalty and a Lobo sack would force the Cubs to punt it away.  It would not benefit the Lobos much as they would also punt away their first possession, however, the next break would pay off.

Isaac Cortez would pickoff a Brownfield pass and bring it back to the Cub 35 yard line.

The Lobo offense would take advantage of the turnover as Sophomore Nick Gerber rushed in from 21 yards out and the Lobos drew first blood leading seven-to-nothing with 3:59 to go in the opening quarter.

Brownfield would take the next possession deep into Lobo territory but after failing to convert a four down try, the Lobos again rang the bell.

Covering 89 yards on five plays, NIck Gerber would cap off the drive on a 43 yard touchdown pass to Trenton Jones.  With Jeffery Elliot’s PAT the Lobos led Brownfield 14-to-nothing with 7:35 to go in the half.

Brownfield again would lose the ball on downs and gave the ball back to the Lobos at their own 27.  After a Nate Gonzales run to the Cub three, Gerber would throw his second TD of the night.  This time, Tandon Jones would reel in a Gerber pass for the score and the Lobos led 21 to nothing with 1:53 to go in the half.

The Cubs would again drive deep into Lobo territory but on third and goal, Trenton Jones would pick off a Brownfield pass and the Lobos would run off the front half clock with a 21-to-nothing lead.

The Lobos got rolling right out of the gate in the third.

After a failed onside kick attempt by the Cubs, the Lobos would cover 54 yards on six plays.  Trenton Jones would haul in his second touchdown catch of the game and put the Lobos in front 28-to-nothing with 9:03 to play in the third quarter.

Brownfield would get on the board late in the third when the Lobos would cough up a fumble.

The Cubs took advantage of the miscue and five plays later Jonathan Saenz would scamper in from three yards out.  The Lobos still led 28-to-six and would strike right back.

The Lobos would get a four passing touchdown for Nick Gerber when he would hit Tandon Jones.  Jones sprinted 22 yards for his second score of the day and put Levelland in front 34-to-si.

Brownfield answered right back.  Ezequlias Morin would break off a 29 yard touchdown run and cut the lead to Levelland 34, Brownfield 12 with 8:29 to play.

Levelland was having none of that shortened lead business.  Michael Lopez would rumble 40 yards to the house and put Levelland back in front 29 points at Levelland 41, Brownfield 12 with 2:36 to play.

Brownfield would again answer.

A pass thrown by Simon Jacquez would be tipped by

A Lobo defended only to see Nathan Besler grab the deflection and zip in from 52 yards out cutting the Levelland lead to 41-to-20 with just 1:26 to play.

The next series, the Lobos would attempt to let it go to the locker room, however Brownfield had another idea. After the quaterback Nick Gerber knelt on the ball, Brownfield called a timeout leaving the Lobos no option but to run another offensive play. That play was a simple hand off to Qualin Miller straight ahead. The result was Miller busting lose for 50 yards, another score and a 48-to-20 lead for the Lobos.

Brownfield would take the next possession and as time expired, Simon Jacquez would hit Morin in the endzone for six leaving the Lobos with the with a 48-to-26 win.

Nick Gerber had a solid night to say the least. The Sophomore rushed five times for 46 yards and a touchdown while completing 19-of-26 through the air for 310 yards and four touchdowns.

Trenton Jones and Tandon Jones were the stand out receivers.

Trenton Jones caught six passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns while younger brother Tandon caught seven passes for 90 yards and two scores.

Nate Gonzales added six carries for 51 yards while Qualin Miller carried seven times for 77 yards and a score. Michael Lopez had one carry for 40 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, the Lobos improve to one-and-three on the year and return home on Friday the 26th when they play host to the Denver City Mustangs. Catch the action with pregame show at 6:45pm on KLVT AM1230 and online at http://www.klvtradio.com!
