Star Wars has a plethora of brilliant creatures. And while porgs have taken over the fandom with their adorableness, the foxes have been gaining more fans as well. While we just called them crystal foxes, in a new behind the scenes video we learn exactly what they’re called. And how they came to be in The Last Jedi.

Vulptex, or Vulptices if they’re in a pack, are native to the planet Crait. We learned from EW that because they had consumed the mineral-rich planet, they became crystalline over time due to the crystals beneath the surface. Over 25,000 crystals are used in just making one of these beautiful creatures, which they made as a puppet. They were able to scan the puppet in and create it’s movement digitally.

Now I will say that the puppet looks fairly different from the digital version which makes me a bit sad. The face is almost lynx-like in the trailer. However, these creatures are absolutely fascinating. I love that they completely evolved from their environment. I’m sure they’re used completely sparingly in the movie but I instantly want to know more. Also, if the name isn’t based on the Pokemon Vulpix, I’ll eat my hat!
