S&T strikes first, but falls to Flyers 3-2

Box Score (Romeoville, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored 93 seconds into the game but it wouldn't be enough as the Lewis Flyers rallied for a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill.

Kendall Fitzpatrick (Houston, Texas/Memorial ) put the Lady Miners (0-4, 0-2 GLVC) in front lofting a high shot over the goalkeeper and into the net for her first goal of the season. Lewis (1-2-1, 1-1 GLVC)  began applying pressure but the S&T defense got four saves from Carrie Levy (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge ) and five blocked shots to keep them in front.

The Flyers broke through in the 19th minute as Meg Carmody hit Maggie Moran with a long pass and Moran drove into the box and beat Levy to tie the game. After that goal the Lady Miners registered six of the next seven shots and had a couple of chances to retake the lead but Mara Bennett made some key saves to keep the game tied.

Lewis held a 12-9 edge in shots in the opening frame and 5-4 in shots on goal. Levy made four saves in the opening period for S&T while Bennett made three for the Flyers.

The Lady Miners had a couple of chances early in the second half to regain the lead but were unable to get it past Bennett. Lewis took the lead in the 64th minute. A foul by S&T resulted in a free kick at the top of the box which Jessica Chavez put in for a goal. The Lady Miners had two chances less than 30 seconds after that goal. Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had a shot blocked and then she got the rebound but was saved off the line by a Flyer defender.

Lewis added to its lead in the 83rd minute when Danielle DiGioia chipped one over Levy in the box off a pass from the left side. S&T kept fighting as Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) was denied her second goal of the season on a save by Bennett in the 85th minute. Kendra Wood (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) brought the Lady Miners to within a goal heading home a long free kick from Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) in the 88th minute for her first of the season as well.

The Flyers finished the game outshooting S&T 18-16 and put 10 of those on goal compared to eight for the Lady Miners. Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) led S&T with five shots, two on goal while Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) recorded three shots. Wood and Leah Camery (Anchorage, Alaska/Steller Secondary School) took two shots each. Levy finished the contest making seven saves.

The Lady Miners are back at home this Friday evening to face Saint Joseph's College beginning at 5 p.m.
