Privateers Drop Non-Conference Match To Rutgers-Newark Wednesday Night

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2014) – The Maritime women's volleyball team lost its non-conference contest Wednesday night to Rutgers-Newark in straight sets (25-21, 25-9, 25-9) at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Privateers fall to 8-11 overall on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 13-10.
 
        All of Maritime's kills came from three players, as freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led all players in the match with 10 kills. Sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) recorded six kills, while freshman Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) registered five. Brady was just one dig shy of a double-double as she picked up nine on the night.
 
        Senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) had a team-high 12 assists, while Lombardo chipped in with nine helpers. Defensively, Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) led the Privateers with 14 digs on the night, while Kempski had 13.
 
        For Rutgers-Newark, sophomore Tabitha Davis led the way with eight kills. Freshmen Sydney Tuman and Samantha Renfree both recorded seven kills. Freshman Karolina Kopacz had a match-high 24 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double. Freshman libero Sue Riley led all players with 20 digs, while sophomore Kathy Hormaza picked up 10.
 
        Maritime returns to action this weekend with four Skyline Conference matches. The Privateers will travel to Farmingdale, Long Island to face Farmingdale State and Sarah Lawrence on Saturday, Oct. 25.
