Jamie Mullins, 28, from St Ann’s, was seen outside the Fiveways Centre in Sherwood, which is used for Islamic prayer, on June 18 during Ramadan.

Mullins was wearing a football shirt, drinking from a can of beer and carrying a St George’s flag when he committed the offence.

He then smeared pork sausage meat on the mosque.

Magistrates’ chairman Paul Ensor told Mullins: ‘I think you would agree the whole incident was pretty shameful. You consumed a considerable amount of alcohol – 10 to 20 pints in that region and that had an impact on your behaviour.

‘The behaviour was stupid and not acceptable in a civilised society.

‘We think you knew what the premises was used for. It has had an impact on the community. You are an idiot – think about what drink does to people.

‘It turns us into idiots, whether we are lovable or hateable idiot depends on the idiot that was drinking. You can’t be in control when you drink that much.’

Speaking after the verdict, Mullins said: ‘I apologise for what I have done and my actions and how they may have affected the Muslim community.

‘I am from St Ann’s – my little brother is mixed race and my dad is Jamaican – I do not have a problem with anyone. The reason I acted that way I was just drunk.’

Asif Mohammed, 54, secretary of the Fiveways Centre and trustee, said: ‘I do not feel any hatred towards them. We would like an opportunity to sit down with them and ask them ‘why?’.

‘At the end of the day they do not realise that Muslims are just as important part of British society as anyone else.

‘It would be good for them to come here and speak to people about the religion and what it stands for and overcome the negative messages you see within the media.’

Superintendent Ted Antill, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: ‘We take every report of hate crime in Nottinghamshire seriously and will always investigate.

‘I am pleased that the racially aggravated element of this crime has been recognised by the courts. This sends a clear message that behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated in our county.

‘No one should have to live in fear due to their gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, race or religion.’
