Publishing Clearing House

Our new, temporary print shop in Chicago

We have been busy gearing up for a major new presentation of our art and publishing. We have set up a print shop in Chicago as a part of "A Proximity of Consciousness: Art and Social Action," curated by Mary Jane Jacob and Kate Zeller. It opens on Friday, September 19. Both of us will be there so please stop by and visit. Here are the details:

September 20–December 20
Reception: Friday, September 19, 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Sullivan Galleries, 33 S. State St., 7th floor

About the exhibition:

At the core of Chicago’s intellectual and creative life stand these influential artists for whom this city itself was a springboard for a new way of thinking about art at the intersection of society. Their work has influenced generations, having made social practice a worldwide phenomenon. Now this exhibition brings their ideas alive through 10 newly commissioned projects. Exhibiting artists: Jim Duignan, Paul Durica and Heather Radke, Pablo Helguera, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Dan Peterman, J. Morgan Puett, Michael Rakowitz, Laurie Jo Reynolds, Temporary Services, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

News from Half Letter Press:

Publishing in the Realm of Plant Fibers and Electrons

By Temporary Services, illustrations by Kione Kochi, additional support from Kristian Johannson and Leah Mackin
Temporary Services has been actively thinking about, making, talking about, selling, and giving away publications for over 16 years. We have written or said things in interviews and lectures about our publishing, but we have never sat down to craft a long-form essay about our efforts and where they fit in the larger world of artist books, artist publishing and book making.  This booklet is an attempt to articulate our ideas about publishing, particularly in light of the current post-digital environment. Against Competition

By Marc Fischer
Marc Fischer wrote "Against Competition" in 2006. The essay takes on the pervasive and corrosive problem of competition that exists and is created between artists by a market-driven art system. The essay also explores productive collaborative models in art, as well as in underground music subcultures whose approaches to generosity and working together might be something for artists to learn from. Fischer's has been a popular text used in classes and downloaded many more times than the initial print run of the magazine the text was first published in. We offer this publication in a variety of formats: PRINT • EPUB • 5 TYPES OF PDFS

Allan Sekula: Dismal Science - Photo Works 1972 - 1996

By Allan Sekula
Allan Sekula is a longtime favorite of Temporary Services and we were thrilled to be able to get some copies of this out of print book to sell from our friends at University Galleries of Illinois State University. Sekula's books have gotten outrageously expensive since his death. This heavily illustrated and great looking book is no exception, but we're selling it for just a hair above retail and hope that carrying it will expose yet more people to his important work. Fish Story [PDF]

By Allan Sekula
The catalogue Fish Story accompanies the exhibition Allan Sekula – Fish Story. This exhibition was the third in a cycle of works on the imaginary and material geographies of the advanced capitalist world. ollowing the Sketch for a Geography Lesson (1983) and the Canadian Notes (1986), Fish story shifted from landscape to the fluidity of seascape, while with the destabilization of the world geopolitical balance beginning in 1989, the drift and uncertainty of an extended work in progress seemed appropriate.
