I am
by The Aggregate Kid

i am pushing it away but
now, i never new
how, that you were to
ask why.

you might not know it,not
even till ya
die. so be bold to ask me
out, always a girl who has no
manners at all. a friend i
defininately love him, or is it the
other side of the
gentle
spring sun.

outdoor activities slowly begin,
swimming pools are open
cake is near, here comes the
birthday fear!

do not
despair and do what’s
right. is it true,
that we
live it or
do we live it
or do we experiance
it? it’s
something we
shant say, for
life is long or short, life
is a good
life it’s confusing
but like a dove. love is patient
love is one desk
away leans over to
hear tho. how could he
like me? i
mean, deep inside, i can do is think
about how life makes
you wanna shout!

What it’s all about

I used to work for a company with a website for kids. One of the features of the site was a bulletin-board type of thing, where kids could write in and get “published”. A lot of kids wrote in with poetry. Some of it was actually pretty good. You know, for a 12 year old.

Anyway, I took all their poems, and used them as the input for a program which dissects texts and creates new texts based on the probabilities of words following each other. It’s called “I am” because those are always the first two words of the poem. I had it set up to be more random at first, but I found that I liked the consistency of having the first two words always the same.

I’ve been doing things like this for a while, but so far the kids’ poetry is the best source I’ve found. If you have any comments about this page, I’d love to hear them. Please use the form below.

Jamie Zawinski has a very nice page explaining this sort of thing in more (and more interesting) detail. Check it out.

  1. I think this is a great idea and a wonderful project.
Your poem generator also workss quite well as a
writing prompt for other forms of writing.
    Keep up the good work.
    Love Rev.Bola

  2. Seems like a great source of texts for a pop music band. Some of them I might have heard on the radio lately.
All in all, thank you for this thing!

  3. What Cult Doctor said. I believe your story on how you created this site, webmaster… I just think it serves a broader purpose than you let on in your innocent story. ;)
