Arkansas–Pine Bluff defeats injury-riddled Lady Panthers

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – With injuries continuing to hamper their lineup, the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers fought valiantly but fell to Arkansas–Pine Bluff in three sets Friday.

Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-20, and 25-23.

Ashlie Jones knocked down a match-high 12 kills to lead the Golden Lions (8-16, 4-1 SWAC). Canadian national Courtney Brand picked out a match-high 15 digs.

Candyce Alexander (Bedford, Texas / Missouri State–Western Plains)
led the Lady Panthers with seven kills and nine digs, team highs in both categories. Jasmine Lewis (Rowlett, Texas / Rowlett HS) added six kills for Prairie View A&M.

The Lady Panthers (7-16) fell to 1-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Prairie View A&M lost starting setter Ana Kiso to an ankle injury in Tuesday's win at Grambling State. The SWAC's leader in assists is expected to miss the rest of the regular season, but should be return to the court by the postseason.

In Kiso's absence, Alexander and sophomore Paige Chuidian (Katy, Texas / Morton Ranch HS) split the setting duties as Prairie View A&M switched to a 6-2 formation. Chuidian handed out a career-best 14 assists, while Alexander added nine assists.

The Lions jumped out to a quick lead and never trailed in the first set, but found their hosts to be more resistant in the second and third sets. The Panthers got out to an 8-1 lead in set three, but Pine Bluff rallied to tie the score by the 17th point.

Arkansas–Pine Bluff hit .242 for the match, while holding Prairie View A&M to a .083 hitting percentage.

The Lady Panthers return to action Wednesday when they host Grambling State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
