Inside the Incredible Loew's Kings Theatre Restoration

The city embarked on a $94 million restoration of the Loew's Kings Theatre in Flatbush in January of 2013 and, incredibly, after less than two years of work, the theatre is still on track for a January, 2015 opening date. Throughout the restoration, we've only gotten a few glimpses inside — enough to whet the appetite, but not to appreciate the enormous scope of the project. That changed yesterday when the developers, architects, and city opened the doors to the theatre for a hardhat tour, revealing the not-quite-finished interiors. They're even more breathtaking than you probably imagined.

A number of people and groups have worked together to bring the Loew's Kings Theatre — which will be the third largest theater in the city, and the largest in Brooklyn — back. The development was undertaken by the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Kings Theatre Redevelopment Company, which consists of ACE Theatrical Group, Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group, and the National Development Council. Public sector funding was provided by the city, with former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz directing a lot of that money into the project. Gilbane is the general contractor.
