Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer strikes early enroute to road win at New Paltz

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team rushed to a 2-0 lead in the opening 12 minutes of today's match at New Paltz enroute to a 3-1 victory against the Hawks.  The win for Oneonta kept them unbeaten on the season while remaining on top of the SUNYAC with a 6-0-1 record.

The 12-0-2 start for the Red Dragons has tied them for the best unbeaten start to a season in the program's history.  In 1973, Oneonta began the season with the same record before dropping its final game of the year in the NCAA tournament to finish 12-1-2.

The win for Oneonta also kept them a perfect 7-0 on the road including 5-0 in conference road games.  The Red Dragons are now unbeaten in its last 19 SUNYAC regular season contests dating back to 2012.  Oneonta has put together a record of 16-0-3 during that stretch.

"Another good road win," texted Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "Some of our attacking play was exceptional and our second goal was as good as you will ever see including at least 15 passes."

Today's game was over early, as Oneonta tallied in the opening minute and the 12th minute to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  Junior Greg Silvestro (West Sayville/Connetquot) got the Red Dragons rolling just 50 seconds into the match off an assist by classmate Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).  Williams would give Oneonta the 2-0 lead at 11:24 into the contest with an assist from senior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore).

Michael Levko would cut the Oneonta lead in half in the 68th minute off an assist from Alec Johnson.  Oneonta countered less than three minutes later when junior Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) scored his third of the season.

Senior keeper Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) made a pair of saves and picked up his eighth win of the season in goal for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons will travel to Clinton, NY on Tuesday to face Hamilton College beginning at 4pm.
