Francheska Cedres (Carolina, P.R.) made history Saturday as the graduate student became the all-time leader for digs in the Georgian Court University volleyball record book during a tri-match in the GCU Wellness Center Arena.
Coming into the day needing just 11 digs to tie the career mark set of 1,491, established by
Rebecca Walczak (2004-07). Cedres secured 10 digs in the Lions' 3-0 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)-foe Felician College to begin the day and achieved the miletone watermark with 20 more in a 3-2 loss to St. Anselm College in the nightcap.
The Lions (13-11, 9-3 CACC) extended their season-long winning streak to six straight in the first match on the docket, defeating the Golden Falcons (5-11, 3-9 CACC) by scores of 25-14, 25-21, and 25-15.
Tatiana Villariny-Rodriguez (Sr.-Carolina, P.R.) collected a match-best 11 kills while teammate
Kelsey Oliver (So.-Vancouver, Wash.) dished 30 assists. Cedres's 10 digs paced the GCU defense.
Sally Taylor (Fr.-San Diego, Calif.) bested Felician with her eight kills and nine digs.
Susie McKeever (Jr.-North Ft. Myers, Fla.) contributed 19 assists.
It was a rematch of sorts for GCU in the nightcap as the Lions had lost at St. Anselm, 3-2, back on September 21. The back-end of the home-and-home concluded with the same result as the Hawks (10-10) escaped "The Well" with another five-set triumph (23-25, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 15-10).
Lauren Oxley (Jr.-Bristow, Va.) and
Amanda Williams (Fr.-North Andover, Mass.) led the St. Anselm offense with a team-high 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
Natalie Steinwart (Sr.-Aurora, Ill.) collected 40 assists. Three Hawks registered 10+ digs, which included: 12 by
Melissa Jewett (Sr.-Newton, Mass.), 11 from
Catherine Morgan (So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and 10 by
Shannon Douglas (Sr.-Rochester, N.H.).
As for the Lions, Rodriguez crunched a season-high 23 kills in the defeat while Oliver added 44 more assists.
Jennifer Smith (So.-Redlands, Calif.) settled 16 digs while
Dara Schroeder (Sr.-Bordentown, N.J.) and
Taylor Winchester (Jr.-Hesperia, Calif.) tallied 12 apiece.
GCU stays home for its next match as the Lions welcome West Chester University Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
