Yucatan is Murder:
Friday, September 18 at 7 PM
Dirk Wyle is the pen name of Duncan H. Haynes, Ph.D., a 30-year veteran of biomedical science. Commercial success of his drug microencapsulation technology enabled an early retirement, allowing him to focus on his passion for literature.. His creative process involves thinking up scientific projects, perplexing challenges and mortal threats for his free-spirited protagonist, Ben Candidi.

Yucatan is Murder
Vultures circling over the Yucatán scrubland lead vacationing Ben Candidi (Ph.D.) to an ugly sight - a young peasant with his heart cut out, draped over a boulder. Rebecca Levis (M.D.) recognizes the "peasant" as B'alam Chuc, an engineering student.  The police insist the motive was robbery.  Ben searches for what lured B'alam to the scene of his death. As the picture of an evil and debauched criminal conspiracy emerges, Ben and Rebecca are faced with two questions: Was B'alam truly innocent? And is it time to get out of Yucatán?Signed: 12.45

Book Reviews
A Curious Beginning
By Deanna Raybourn
Reviewed by Joanne Sinchuk
I have always been a fan of Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey mysteries, and so I was thrilled to find out she is starting a new series, with a new, younger character, Veronica Speedwell.
Raybourn has created a fascinating heroine, a budding, self taught scientist with a few scientific publications under her belt, and adventuress and lepidopterist who has traveled the world in pursuit of her hobby.  Veronica is an orphan, raised by two unmarried sisters she called "Aunt".  While in her mid-twenties, her last aunt dies, leaving her alone with a small inheritance.  Faced with the choice of staying in London and leading a boring life as a wife and stepmother, she sets off instead to explore the world.
Veronica's adventures, are truly marvelous for a young woman in 1887 London, involving a hand-some taxidermist and explorer, an encounter with a travelling carnival, the murder of a close friend of her mother's, and the final reveal of her mysterious birth, and who her parents really were.
Veronica is really a unique character, and would be considered progressive even by today's standards.  I am anxious to see where her second adventure takes her (and hopefully the handsome taxidermist).

She's Not There
By P.J. Parrish
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
What would you do if you woke up in a hospital and the only thing you know is your first name? Not what happened; how or why you got there; and who is this man who says he is your husband?
Amelia only knows she is in a hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with cuts and bruises all over her body. As her broken body heals, she tries to piece together snippets of her life as she flees from a man who is chasing her.
P.J. Parrish has expertly crafted a non-stop, suspense-filled thriller in She's Not There. The characters come to life and jump off the pages. This story is all too real, a story that can happen to anyone. Remember that as you are unable to stop turning the pages well into the night. It is a story you won't soon forget.

Is Fat Bob Dead Yet?
By Stephen Dobyns
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Fans of Elmore Leonard take note: the characters in Stephen Dobyns ' new crime caper are as colorful as the characters in the books of the late Elmore Leonard. And they find themselves in hilarious, absurd situations, equally reminiscent of Leonard 's books.
The story opens with an accident involving a dump truck backing into the path of a speeding motorcycle on a street in downtown New London, CT. The rider is killed, but his identity is uncertain.
The event is the catalyst for the introduction of several key characters. The two detectives involved are competent but adversarial with each other. Connor Raposo, a con man with secrets, witnesses the accident when he emerges from a shoe repair shop clutching his Bruno Magli loafers.   Another witness is Fidgit, a well known homeless man. Various spouses, small time criminals, and petty thieves round out this well drawn cast of characters.
The story is initially about figuring out the why and who of an accident that is in fact a planned murder. But as in any well written crime caper, the best parts are the side stories and backgrounds of the characters. In this case, the stories and vignettes range from witness protection to karaoke obsession to charitable donation scams.
One of the best scams is telemarketing for FBNA, abbreviation for Free Beagles from Nicotine Addiction research. Thus the cover of the book, which is a picture of a beagle with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
Be prepared to laugh often and out loud. Hopefully, we will see more caper novels from Mr. Dobyns. READ IT. Penguin Random House 26.95

The White Ghost
By James R. Benn
Reviewed by Rebecca Swope
In his latest Billy Boyle WWII mystery, James R. Benn has raised the bar for tension and expectation in a thriller. Bill meets with Lt. John F. Kennedy immediately after the PT 109 incident. Kennedy is a suspect in the death of a native coastwatcher who worked under the aegis of allied intelligence. Boyle has been directed by the Kennedy family to remove the shadow of murder from Jack Kennedy, while the military waffles between making Jack a hero or throwing him in irons.
Boyle's past relations with the Kennedys and Jack, in particular, weave a web of trouble that Boyle has to unravel. Throughout his investigation, Boyle encounters roadblocks, intrigue, shifting identities, and wartime black markets. Japanese attacks on the islands where Boyle and Kennedy are located complicate matters.
T     wo more murders, one of them of a Navy nurse, throw Boyle off his stride. Once he's back on it, the true culprit is discovered.
This is a thrill ride of a novel. You can almost smell the smoke from the fires, feel the gritty sand between your toes, and taste the sweat as it drips down your face in the Pacific heat.
Highly recommended. Soho Press 26.95
