This Southern charmer is currently the hippest city in the US.

Known for its history and graceful architecture, a hipster influx in recent years has seen it become one of the most food-minded of them all.

The South Carolina favourite has topped the US city poll at travel magazine Conde Nast Traveller. And it’s Bill Murray’s home town. Need we say more?

Get orientated

King Street, which runs through downtown, is the place to get your bearings. Upper King is focused on design and dining, middle King Street is more fashion-focused, and lower King boasts antique shops and historic houses – such as the Nathaniel Russell House in Meeting Street.

To learn about the city, the horse-drawn carriages on Market Street, while seemingly for tourists, are a great way to discover the history of Charleston and see some of its stunning architecture. Book online – typically the first morning carriage tour offers a discounted ticket.

Glam It Up

Enjoy an evening out at the elegant Charleston Grill with chef Michelle Weaver, featuring live jazz and classic southern elegance. Or try Circa 1886 , in the historic Wentworth Mansion; set menus start at $45. For a more modern dining twist make reservations at The Ordinary on King Street. Chef Mike Lata’s restaurant in an old bank specialises in seafood, especially oysters. Afterwards head out for cocktails at new-age speakeasies such as Prohibition.

On The Cheap

Venture away from downtown to Johns Island to visit the Angel Oak, the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River – it’s free.

There are plenty of beaches within easy reach, including Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms.

Or stroll along the promenade enjoying historic markers while taking in the stunning mansions South of Broad, Rainbow Row (a colourful row of historic houses), and the fresh sea air. Take a lesson at Charleston Cooks! You’ll learn to cook Southern classics such as fried chicken and grits – and enjoy a glass of wine or two – for $25.

What’s New

Amid the history there’s plenty that’s new in Charleston, including Leon’s Oyster Shop for the best fried chicken sandwich and Siam salad. Owned by Brooks Reitz of Jack Rudy Cocktail Co , this is where locals meet up to lunch casually.

Rewined Candles feature fantastic wine-scented candles in recycled wine bottles. Or make your own scented candle in their newly opened Candlefish shop at 71 Wentworth.

Taking it easy: A carriage ride is the perfect way to see the city

Where to Stay

There are a number of cozy historic inns in Charleston, such as the Ansonborough Inn , from $139, or the John Rutledge House Inn – a smart B&B with wrought iron balconies as well as complimentary afternoon tea.

For something more modern, head to arts-focused The Vendue , near the harbour.

What’s Happening

From March 4-8 it’s the Charleston Wine + Food festival , drawing some of America’s top chefs. Events across the city include the foodie/arty mash-up Pop. Chic! at The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.

The finale is a chefs’ “potluck” that will feel like you’ve been invited to a Southerner’s home for an epic Lowcountry feast.
