ArtTalk: Creativity and Education Panel

PANELISTS:

Linda Nathan is a Senior Lecturer at Boston University's School of Education. She is the Faculty Director of the Institute for Creative Educational Leadership which she founded in September of 2014 at BU. Before joining Boston University, Linda worked for the Boston Public Schools for over three decades. During that time, she founded the Boston Arts Academy, Boston’s only public high school for visual and performing arts, and served as a Special Advisor to the Superintendent of BPSShe also founded the Center for Arts in Education, the outreach, professional development, and arts advocacy arm of Boston Arts Academy and served as its Executive Director. She continues to direct the National Teacher Artist Fellowship which is administered through the Center for Arts in Education. For over a decade, Dr. Nathan has taught a course at the Harvard Graduate School of Education titled “Building Democratic Schools.” She has written a widely-praised book about teaching and leadership in urban schools, “The Hardest Questions Aren’t on the Test,” which was also published in Spanish. Linda Nathan holds a Doctorate in Education from Harvard University, a Master’s degree in education administration from Antioch University, a Master’s of performing arts from Emerson College, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Priscilla H. Sanville is an Associate Professor Emerita at Lesley University.  She received her Ph.D. from the Union Institute in Multicultural Education with a focus on culture and learning styles.  Her master's degree was in Creativity and the power of healing from Lesley College. Her B.A. was in Speech and Theatre with a minor in Education from the University of Denver, CO. She was an elementary school teacher for fifteen years (1st, 2nd, 3rd grade) and a supervisor of a drama/theatre program for another 15 years in the public schools (K-12). Sanville’s expertise lies in drama, dance and group facilitation, particularly in dealing with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Her passion is directed toward social justice through the arts and interdisciplinary curriculum. Sanville is interested in the dialogue that can occur in our classrooms and community cross-culturally as well as culturally responsive teaching. She has taught in Russia, Israel, British Columbia and Quebec. Sanville is a faculty mentor, student advisor and supervisor in the Arts, Community and Education Master’s degree program where she also was the former director and co-founder of the Program for eight years. She is also on the board of the Community Art Center in Cambridge, MA.

Jennifer Hurley-Wales, CEO and Executive Producer is a co-founder of From the Top. From the Top reaches more than two million people per year through its many programs and media platforms. Hurley-Wales spent 17 years in arts management prior to the founding of From the Top. In her decade at the New England Conservatory of Music, she was a senior development officer for the $34 million Capital Campaign, and subsequently served as the interim Director of External Affairs and Special Projects Director, identifying collaborations and strategic partnerships for the Conservatory. Hurley-Wales holds a B.A. from Denison University.

Brenna McCormick believes that when we cultivate our creativity we cultivate our best selves.  Her passion for studying and nurturing creative thinking has led her to focus her career on sharing divergent thinking skills that allow individuals to develop greater creative confidence and companies to promote cultures that fosters breakthrough thinking.  She is a brand strategist, entrepreneur, and part-time faculty member in the Department of Marketing Communication at Emerson College where she teaches Creative Thinking and Problem Solving in the graduate Integrated Marketing Communication program.

With eight years consulting and agency experience, and eight years management experience for a luxury retailer, Brenna is passionate about leveraging research insights to develop creative ideas and innovative strategies that make a lasting impact.  Her career started in the stationery industry where she established a love of all things tactile and tangible when weaving together ideas, strategy and storytelling.  

MODERATORS:

Tracie Dunn has taught studio arts at the high school level in Massachusetts' public schools since 2001. Her instructional practices encourage positive interpersonal experiences and substantial learning opportunities through the process of making art. She has also designed arts opportunities for under-served children and families living in New York City, taught in Virginia's Summer Residential Governor's School, and in 2012, helped to launch "Rivers and Revolutions" at Concord-Carlisle High School. In addition to teaching, Tracie recently opened a studio space at the Bradford Mills' ArtScape in West Concord. Tracie holds a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and an M.A. from New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Michael Goodwin has extensive teaching experience at the high school level in public and private schools across New England, having worked with a wide range of student populations. He has also served as the academic director of the Great Books Summer Program, has developed programs for at-risk youths, and most recently founded “Rivers and Revolutions,” a school-within-a-school at Concord-Carlisle High School that serves as the basis for the instructional model of the Institute. Michael holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Amherst College and a M. Ed. in School Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
