Claflin Lady Panthers Pushes Win Streak to Three with Win over Winston-Salem State

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University women's basketball team pushed its win streak to three with a 53-47 non-conference win over Winston-Salem State.  The contest was the third of five straight home games for the Lady Panthers.
 
Claflin started the game on a 12-4 run within the first five-plus minutes.  The Lady Panthers continued to press, pushing their lead to 13, 17-4 by the 10:51 mark.  Claflin maintained the control of the game over the next four minutes before a three-pointer by Winston-Salem's Dionna Scott at the 5:50 mark sparked an 8-2 run over two minutes that the Lady Panther's deficit to six, 23-17.  Claflin scored the next nine-of-11 points to push its lead to 12, 27-17, with a little over two minutes remaining, but the Lady Rams would not be done.  Winston-Salem State closed the first half on a 6-0 run, heading into the locker room down by six, 31-25.
 
The Lady Rams maintained the momentum to start the second half, opening with a 6-1 run over the first three minutes to pull within one, 32-31.  Two consequent free-throws Jonvanh Graham at the 16:09 mark gave Winston-Salem its first lead, since the 18:37 mark of the first half, 33-31.  Briana Chisolm connected on two-free throws at the 14:21 mark to put Claflin ahead for good.  The Lady Rams once again closed the margin to one, 48-47, but could not get any closer.  The Lady Panthers held Winston-Salem State scoreless over the remaining three-plus minutes en route to the six point victory.
 
Senior Karahn Scott had a solid performance to lead Claflin in the win.  Scott recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  The Lady Panthers had three players to finish the game in double-figures as junior Shaniece Brown scored a team-high 13 and senior Uniqua Mitchell contributed 12 in the win. Junior Jaquanna Davis came off the bench to scored four points with eight rebounds and one block shot.
 
Dionna Scott scored a game-high 14 points to lead Winston-Salem State.  Jovanah Graham scored 13 points and ShaQuira Palmer cleared 10 rebounds for the Lady Rams, who dropped to 2-3 on the season. 
 
The Lady Panthers will host GRU-Augusta in a non-conference game on Monday, Dec. 1.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Tullis Arena on the campus of Claflin.
