October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes developmental delays and specific physical characteristics. According to NDSS, about 1 in 700 babies in the US is born with Down syndrome. The NARIC collection includes many articles, books, and reports on Down syndrome from NIDRR-funded projects and other sources. We also recommend visiting the NDSS YouTube channel for educational videos and webinars on living independently with Down syndrome.

 

Resource Highlight: Employment After Spinal Cord Injury - How Do You Get There?

The NIDRR-funded Northwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury System Center (NWRSCIS) offers Employment After Spinal Cord Injury: How Do You Get There?, the latest in the SCI Forum video series. Several individuals with SCI share their experiences of finding employment after their injuries and how they navigated hurdles of accessibility, health issues, insurance considerations, and other financial and practical concerns. Plus, a vocational counselor provides information to help employees with SCI meet their goals.

 

Participate: Survey on Exercise and SCI

The NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Secondary Conditions in the Rehabilitation of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury offers a new quick survey on exercise and spinal cord injury (SCI). Results from the survey will be used to develop new educational materials for the SCI community.

 

Elsewhere in the Community: High Expectations - Transforming the American Workforce as the ADA Generation Comes of Age

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released a report, High Expectations: Transforming the American Workforce as the ADA Generation Comes of Age (PDF). The report offers steps to improve the employment of the "ADA Generation" - young men and women who have come of age since the ADA was enacted, and who are now seeking competitive employment.

TBI Research in the News

Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD, director of the NIDRR-funded Northern New Jersey Traumatic Brain Injury System Center (NNJTBIS), was interviewed by two local television stations during the NNJTBIS consumer conference, Brain Injury: The Challenge of Change. In interviews with News 12 New Jersey and WMBC, Dr. Chiaravalloti discussed raising awareness in the community of the dangers of brain injury, including concussions from youth sports.
 

Wall Street Journal Highlights Research on Autism and Employment

The work of the recently-completed NIDRR-funded project Vocational Rehabilitation Service Models for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (VCU ASD Career Links) was highlighted in the article Training Program Helps Students with Autism Land Jobs in a recent issue of the Wall Street Journal. The article focuses on results of the VCU ASD Career Links project (PDF), where students with autism spent a year in intensive, custom-designed study and job training programs with local hospitals.
 
Health Care Access in Focus
Martha Hodgesmith, JD, from the recently-completed NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Measurement and Interdependence in Community Living (RRTC MICL), presented Listening to Their Voices - Improving Access to Health Care Using a Community Engagement Initiative Model (PDF) at the National Home & Community Based Services Conference in September. Ms. Hodgesmith's discussion focused on improving health care access for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
 

Webcast: Acute Secondary Conditions and Chronic Conditions Among Long-Term SCI Survivors

The NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Secondary Conditions in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury will present a webcast, Acute Secondary Conditions and Chronic Conditions Among Long-Term SCI Survivors, October 31st, 12-1pm EST. Project Director James Krause, PhD, will discuss how to differentiate acute secondary conditions from chronic conditions, how to describe aging considerations relating to acute secondary and chronic conditions, and how to identify their prevalence and risk factors using data from the current project. No registration is required for this free webcast which will be archived with previous sessions.
