Miners blank USI, make move up in GLVC standings

ROLLA, Mo. – Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) struck again on Sunday and as a result, the Missouri S&T men's soccer team moved one step closer to landing a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

For the third time in the last four games, Abichabki scored the decisive goal in a Miner victory, the latest coming early in the second half as the Miners downed Southern Indiana 1-0 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The victory over the Screaming Eagles, who came into the game tied for eighth place with S&T in the GLVC, not only broke the tie with USI but vaulted it into seventh in the league standings past Wisconsin-Parkside – who lost 4-1 Sunday to GLVC leader Quincy – with three games remaining on the schedule.  The top eight finishers will qualify for the conference tournament.

Following a first half in which it was outshot 8-3, the Miners struck quickly after the intermission.  Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany) sent a ball to the wing to Abichabki, who ripped a shot past USI goalkeeper Auston Bruder just 3:37 into the second half to provide the Miners with their only goal of the afternoon.

S&T had only one of those three shots on goal in the first half, but had a 12-5 advantage in that department over the final 45 minutes.  The Miners had seven shots on net in the second half to two for USI, but James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) turned away both of those efforts to record his fifth shutout of the season.

Holloway made the save of the contest in the 77th minute when he leaped to his right to stop a shot from the middle of the field by Logan Ball.  That also turned out to be the last shot the Screaming Eagles (5-7-2, 4-6-2 GLVC) would have in the contest as the Miners (6-6-2, 5-5-2 GLVC) finished with a 15-13 edge.

Missouri S&T will head to the road Friday for a 2:30 p.m. contest against William Jewell in Liberty, Mo.  The Miners' final home game will take place next Sunday against Rockhurst.
