Director’s Message

Dear Carbondale Citizens, It’s been a busy but wonderful summer for the Recreation Dept. Our staff takes great pride in the number and diversity of programs it offers, and also in staging or facilitating community-wide special events. And when town staff and government leaders collaborate with local citizens and organizations to seek grant funding to enhance or build new recreational facilities, it’s been a successful strategy due to limited town funds available. This was evident with the recently completed community garden and bike park projects, and will occur again this fall and next spring when the Gus Darien Rodeo bleacher roof is installed, the rodeo announcer’s booth is renovated, and a shade shelter over the community bread oven at Bonnie Fischer Park is built. Following these projects, there are also tentative plans to build a community/school playground at the new Montessori School through a town applied for GOCO grant. The Roaring Fork Pickleball Club also hopes to begin a fund raising campaign to seek matching monies for a future GOCO grant to build pickleball courts on RE-1 School District property. And last a collaborative partnership is about to begin between the Town, Mt. Sopris Historical Society, and Colorado Mountain College to build a heritage orchard and garden on the town owned Thompson House National Historical Site park property. In closing, if you wish to share your ideas or views regarding park and recreation issues, please feel free to contact me or discuss them with the Parks & Recreation Commission. Sincerely, Jeff Jackel Recreation Director

Manager’s Message As a recreation professional, as you can imagine, not much of my study time in this field was spent mastering Newton’s Laws of Physics, but I am starting to realize that maybe it should have been. Our bodies and minds enact these laws on a daily basis. In physics, the most basic rule states “an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion.” The older I get the more prophetic this law of nature becomes. We have to keep our bodies and minds moving, not just to stave off the inevitable passage of time and its power of degradation, but to keep moving forward, with a sense of purpose, and a destination. I see it every day by observing the participants in our recreation programs, fitness classes and the unwavering dedication of our recreation center members. Every day they are moving up the climbing wall, using their muscles to move weights around, moving the basketball around the court, moving the pedals around the axle of a bike. They are staying in motion, and on a daily basis their insessant motion presents to me the ultimate question we all have to ask ourselves: am I? Are you adhering to the laws of nature? Two of our recreation coordinators have taken this to heart and are moving on to other positions and opportunities. Our programing for many years has been produced by our excellent recreation coordinators, Rebecca Wagner, Bill Kirkland & Jessi Rochel. I hope you had the opportunity to partake in some of our recreation offerings and special events during this time. When the engine is running that smooth, it is inevitable that another law of nature will come into play, and that we all know as Murphy’s Law. Rebecca and Bill have accepted job offers and luckily for all of us they are staying in the valley and I wish them great success with their new endeavors. Rebecca is running the Crown Mt. Recreation District and Bill will soon be “a man in blue.” Jessi will be transferring to the role of Facility Coordinator and awakening the next law of nature that states, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Her equal is named Jason Thraen. Jason will be taking over the youth & adult athletics and special event coordination for the department. Jason worked with us in 2009 as a recreation assistant and has been in the recreation field ever since, but his final words to Jessi when he left the seasonal position were, “How do I get your job?” Well, sticking with the theme here, Newton’s second law states that “the rate of change of in an object is proportional to the force acting on it.” Jason’s forceful patience brought him what he wanted. So, what happens when everyone gets what they want? Everything. New found energy and ideas, optimism and visions for improvements, new programs and opportunities, and the renewed quest to provide the citizens of Carbondale with the best recreation, fitness, health and wellness that we can. Please peruse the multitude of offerings in this brochure and do not forget to be a law abiding citizen and follow the laws of nature, and do whatever it takes to keep moving. Eric Brendlinger Recreation Manager 5
