Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/22/2014) – Chestnut Hill College got back on track this evening, turning aside their cross-city, Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rivals, the University of the Sciences (USciences) in three straight sets, 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-22). Led by their outside hitters, sophomore
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.), the Griffins impressed with a .324 (46K-11E-108TA) team hitting percentage that came efficiently off the direction of junior setter
Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) and the defensive prowess of sophomore libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.).
After a slow start, 7-7, Chestnut Hill College (11-12, 6-6) quickly pulled away on the service of junior outside hitter
Justine Ganan (San Diego, Calif.), who carried the Griffins out to a 15-7 advantage as McBride and freshman middle hitter
Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) powered the run with six combined kills. After a brief interruption, 15-8, the Griffins continued rolling to a 22-9 advantage before taking the set by a 25-12 final.
The second and third sets were more competitive with the Griffins closing out the match 3-0 on identical 25-22 set-victories. In the second set, USciences (2-14, 1-12) trailed the Griffins to a 7-7 tie before rallying for a 12-9 edge. After a home timeout, a refocused pride of Griffins reversed fortunes with a 7-4 run that brought the frame even again at 16-16 and a 5-2 run that forced a Devil timeout, 18-6, before spurring them to a 21-18 advantage and an eventual 25-22 win. The Devils looked to extend the match with a 14-7 advantage in the beginning of the third set, but the accurate serving of McBride initiated 13 straight points, including four aces, that reenergized the Griffins for a second 25-22 win.
Senior outside hitter Amanda DeAngelo (Vestal, N.Y.) and junior middle hitter Caitlyn Crawford (Covington, Ohio) each recorded 11 kills to lead the Devils. Senior setter Kaileen Bevenour (Sicklerville, N.J.) supplied them with 25 assists and joined three others in double-digit digs with ten of her own.
Biro totaled 16 kills on a .289 (16K-5E-38TA) hitting percentage and made three blocks, but it was 12 kills, six aces, and a block from McBride that led the Griffins with 18.5 points. McBride provided her dozen kills on a brilliant .379 (12K-1E-29TA) hitting percentage, keeping pace with the pride, which benefitted from 37 assists, eight digs, and a block from Tamsing and 21 digs from Trabosh.
The women's volleyball team looks to continue their CACC success at Philadelphia University, as they travel down Henry Avenue to challenge the Lady Rams in a 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24.
