An Animated Guide To Elevator Etiquette

Simple rules for using the lift.

    1. When the doors open on an occupied car, stand to the side as if you are about to watch an exciting parade.

    2. Remember those who arrive first board first. If capacity is 7, and you're the eighth to arrive, you are out.

    3. If you must wait for the next car, for the love of all things pure and lovely, don't push the call button until the door closes.

    4. Create enough space to allow car occupants to shuffle themselves so departing passengers can emerge like victors of a great battle.

    5. Then, before boarding, allow the occupants to reenter the car. (If you do not understand why, see Rule #2)

    6. If you're wearing a backpack, please hold it in front of you. (Because it is traditional for everyone to face forward in an elevator car.)

    7. If next to the buttons, you are the ELEVATOR TEAM CAPTAIN. You can let people on Team Elevator if there is room and they hustle. (But use your power wisely.)

    8. However if you are eating food or talking on the phone, nobody will want you on Team Elevator. (Neither of those activities belong on a crowded elevator.)

    9. Finally, once inside the car, respect the space of strangers. If you have a good joke, you must wait for the right moment to share it.
