Operation Unite Night 1

Operation Unite commenced last night with police officers right across Queensland targeting anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence.

The aim of the operation is to draw attention to the broader implications associated with alcohol misuse in public locations, including crime and anti-social behaviour, health and injury problems and the subsequent impact on policing.

Deputy Commissioner Specialist Operations, Ross Barnett said 278 uniformed and plain-clothed police officers were involved in Operation Unite overnight, proactively flooding ‘hot-spots’ across the State.

“Police arrested more than 70 people for charges including obstructing police, possessing a dangerous drug and possessing a weapon in public.”

Officers furnished 19 liquor incident reports and issued 19 liquor infringement notices. More than 152 ‘tip-outs’ of open liquor occurred in public places.

“We would like the community to recognize and consider the consequences of their behavior when out drinking,” Deputy Commissioner Barnett said.

“The Operation is not about ruining anyone’s fun but instead it is focused on cracking down on alcohol misuse, violence and anti-social behaviour which affects the entire community.

“The aim is to make everyone feel safer and more secure while enjoying time with family and friends across the Easter long-weekend.”

More than 2672 random breath tests were conducted last night during the operation with 18 drivers detected drink driving.

“The community is disappointed in the minority of people who drink to excess and then engage in anti-social behaviour like fighting or getting behind the wheel of a car,” he said.

“Unite continues this evening and will conclude on Monday.”
