Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis splits pair of weekend matches

The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team split a pair of weekend matches, as the Red Dragons snapped a three match losing streak against West Division foe Oswego at home Friday, 5-4, before dropping a 5-4 decision at Farmingdale on Saturday.

Friday, Sep. 19 vs. Oswego
SUNY Oneonta opened up doubles competition with a 9-8 (8-6) win with the No. 1 team of Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer). Oneonta's top pair came back from 1-4 down to eventually pulling into the lead.  Sussman and Spencer, used their momentum to force a tiebreak, where they would claim victory.

The pairing of Emily Denney and Kelly Gochan (Lake Grove/Sachem North) continued their impressive run as a doubles team imposing a decisive victory at second doubles 8-2.  That victory keeps the team of juniors undefeated in conference play thus far this season.

The Red and White continued its success in the top portion of singles competition. Sussman, the team's senior captain, won easily at the No. 1, handing her opponent a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing. Spencer matched her double's partner with an equally dominant win at third singles, imposing her will en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Keri Picciochi's (Flushing/The Mary Louis Acamdemy) second set retirement brought the dual match score tied at 4-4 with Kelly Gochan (Lake Grove/Sachem North) at No. 2 singles still on court. Gochan and The Lakers Alicia Kreamer fought through long exchanges into dusk.  Battling poor visibility from the waning light, Gochan finally clinched the match for herself and the Red Dragons with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 triumph.

The Red and White enjoyed their hard-fought win for the night but were back in action Saturday when the squad headed to Long Island where they will faced the SUNY Farmingdale State College Rams in their annual upstate/downstate clash.

Farmingdale, NY –With climate conditions breezy and warm both teams had to deal with the outside weather adversity making the rally's and flight of the ball at times unpredictable.  What was not known at the time was a titanic emotional encounter lasting over five hours was about to take place.  The Red Dragons had great support from the fans that showed up to support the team on enemy turf.

Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Sussman and Spencer won in convincing fashion at first doubles taking the match 8-4. Denny and Gochan yet again continued their dominance in the No. 2 position staying undefeated against SUNY schools, this time winning 9-7 in an emotional match that took over 1 ½ hours to complete.  The No. 3 team of Santarsiero and Picciochi picked up the win 8-3.  These double victories helped the Red Dragons jump to an early 3-0 team match lead before singles play began.

Spencer finished off a perfect weekend with the Red Dragons Lone win in single action. After taking the first set 6-4, she rallied from 2-5 to force a tiebreaker which she triumphed 9-7 to give her the 7-6 set win.

Gochan, coming off an emotional victory the day prior, took her opponent to three sets.  After losing the first set at love, Gochan tied the match winning the second set 6-4 but had little left in the tank and ultimately succumbed 0-6, 6-4, 3-6.

Picchochi battled injury in a three set thriller.  After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Picchochi fought back to even the contest with a second set win also in a tiebreaker.  This set up a battle for the match and the decider of the dual competition.  The two women, who were the only ones left on court, had both teams and fans supporting them on every point.  Picchochi fought back from 0-2 down to eventually go up 4-3 and up a break.  The freshman put left it all on the court battling with all her heart, but fell in the the third set 4-6 (the match score was 6-7, 7-6, 4-6).  The spectators, SUNY Alumni in attendance and players alike applauded the two combatants as they walked off the court in what was a completion of a five-hour marathon dual team tennis match.

The Red Dragons will take a few days off before they begin preparation for its match against its rival Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland on September 26th, beginning at 3:30 PM at Cortland.
