WEST POINT, NY—The NJIT men's tennis team concluded its regular season Thursday, nipping Army, 4-3, at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
NJIT, which won its fourth straight match, finished the 2014 season with a 12-5 mark while Army, who entered with an 8-match win streak, drops to 16-5 overall. Thursday's win is NJIT's first all-time victory over the Black Knights.
Army earned the doubles point, taking two-out-of-three pairings, while NJIT took four-out-of-six singles contests to edge the Black Knights overall, 4-3.
Sophomore
Markus Schultz dropped the first set (1-6), but rallied at second singles over Army's Grant Riechmann, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Schultz teamed up with teammate
Arnaud Holl at third doubles, defeating Army's combo of Joshua Cook and Chad Llewellyn, 8-2. Holl won in straight sets at sixth-singles, 6-0, 7-5, over Rommel Verano.
Andres Alban won in straight sets at third singles for NJIT, topping Caison Best, 6-1, 6-3, followed by a straight set victory from
Erik Artursson at the fourth spot, 6-2, 7-6 over Army's Peter Sienko.
The Highlanders close out the 2014 season at the National Invitational Tennis Tournament hosted by University of Nebraska Omaha on April 26-27.
