Namaste Yoga Friends & Family!

Happy Season of Bunnies, Flowers in bloom, children playing outdoors, removing our layers, and spring cleaning!

Last month we received such positive feedback from all of our members & teachers about our Mindfulness practice, so this month we decided to dive deeper into Yoga Philosophy - Let's Spring right into the practice of Yoga Ethics.

To build a solid yoga practice, a strong foundation is needed. We are fortunate to have followed the same path studied and mastered by many Gurus dating back over 2500 years. One of our gifts is the highly studied text "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali". When any of my students come to me and ask for a book recommendation to deepen their yoga practice, I recommend the Yoga Sutras translated by Sri Swami Satchidananda.  Patanjali provides us with the 8 fold Yoga path - Astanga Yoga.

This month we will begin to explore the first limb of Yoga, Yamas. Yama translates into the word restraints. The yamas consist of 5 parts. Think of them as threads, leading from one into the other to make a whole. The first yama is Ahimsa or Non-Violence/Non-Harming. Ahimsa is the root or foundation of our Yoga practice. May we live in such a way that our thoughts, words, and actions are non-harming to ourselves and all living beings.   The next time you are unsure if you are making a right choice, pause and ask yourself "Is what I am doing or not doing harmful to me or others?" This is a great way to begin the practice of yoga ethics. Simply continue practicing mindfulness and take notice to when you are actively practicing Ahimsa.

Yoga Nidra with Evangeline Houlihan

A simple guided meditation technique that is practiced while lying down on the floor in a supine position (savasana or corpse pose). While the body is very still and relaxed, the mind is aware as you listen to the voice of the teacher guiding you through the meditation practice. Yoga Nidra means yogic sleep or having a trace of awareness. It is the sleep after throwing off the three basic types of tension which are muscular, emotional and mental tension. The brain goes into the Alpha state or hypnogogic state. Prolonging the Alpha state allows for deep healing on all levels of our being. Research has found that fifteen minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to four hours of sleep. One emerges from the practice of Yoga Nidra feeling fresh, invigorated and inspired. Yoga Nidra can be practiced at any time and place or after a regular yoga class. Come and experience absolute relaxation and deep self-awareness through the practice of Yoga Nidra.
