Operation Unite: Night Two

Police continued to target anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence during Night Two of Operation Unite right across Queensland.

Operation Unite, an Australian and New Zealand-wide operation, aims to draw attention to the broader implications associated with alcohol misuse in public locations. This includes crime and anti-social behaviour, health and injury problems and the subsequent impact on policing.

Deputy Commissioner Specialist Operations, Ross Barnett said that despite the reduced trading hours over Good Friday, police were still proactively out in communities targeting these types of offences.

“Across Queensland, the QPS deployed 279 officers – both uniformed and plain clothes. These officers arrested 59 people, with 20 in the Central Region, 15 in Brisbane and 12 in the South Easter Region,” Deputy Commissioner Barnett said.

“More positively, assault incidents were down from the night before, with only four being recorded around the State as part of Operation Unite, compared to 11 the night before.

“I would encourage people to continue to monitor their alcohol consumption and also, not only their personal behaviour when drinking, but the behaviour of others around them.

“The actions of yourself and your friends can often have quite serious consequences on a number of people. Everyone has a right to feel safe and to enjoy their holiday across this Easter long-weekend. Don’t let your behaviour ruin this time for others.”

A total of seven liquor incident reports were completed, with eight liquor infringement notices handed out and 118 ‘tip-outs’ issued.

“Road safety, in particular cracking down on drink or drug-affected driving is also a crucial element of Operation Unite.

“It is disappointing that people still continue to drink and drive, with a total of 27 drink-driving offences recorded overnight from 4,990 Random Breath Tests.

Police will continue this operation for the duration of the long weekend, concluding on Monday April 21 at 6am.
