UN: We Have 15 Years Before We Run Out of Clean Water

22

Water, a three-atom molecule that is absolutely essential for life. So simple, yet so precious, we are approaching crises levels of water reserves. Levels that have been long breached in many areas around the world.

We may soon no longer be able to live our carefree, water-wasteful lives according to the 2015 UN World Water Development report that had been released on March 20th. Simply put, the findings are alarming. We simply cannot continue with our current pace of wasteful policies and practices, because the report states that we will be 40% short of fresh water by 2030—just 15 years from today.

“Unsustainable development pathways and governance failures have affected the quality and availability of water resources, compromising their capacity to generate social and economic benefits. Economic growth itself is not a guarantee for wider social progress.”

The global population continues to grow markedly. Add to this the steady shift from rural to urban areas, especially true today in developing countries but observed worldwide for the past several decades, leading to increased demand for accessible water. Global population is expected to increase by more than a billion by as early as 2050.

With this growth and persistent movement to the cities, there comes a much greater need for water in a world where one out of every nine people do not have access to safe water.

“The onset of climate change, growing demand on finite water resources from agriculture, industry and cities, and increasing pollution in many areas are hastening a water crisis that can only be addressed by cross-sectoral, holistic planning and policies—internationally, regionally and globally.”

— United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Along with population growth and urban migration, the report believes that climate change is a culprit in the looming water crisis. Irregular weather patterns can lead to dwindling rainfall and the eventual depletion of underwater reserves in several previously lush landscapes, while sending floods elsewhere. Today, nearly one billion people do not have adequate access to clean water.

The first victim will as ever be the farmer. His crops will begin to fail and industries supporting farms will face large cuts. This industrial decline leads to socioeconomic collapse and higher levels of poverty. Health problems start sprouting out because of the need to use remaining water reserves for farming… and if you believe that all this is an apocalyptic scenario that is not based on reality, such suffering has LONG plagued our world, even to this day.

For example, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Papua New Guinea, and Mozambique, nearly 1,000 children die every day from diarrhoeal disease, because they ingest unsafe drinking water. More than half the population in these three countries do not have access to clean water, which leads to widespread hygiene and sanitation problems.

Lack of access to this essential resource coupled with a decline in the economy for those in the areas that are dependent on agriculture will certainly lead to an increase in violent conflict—especially in the developing world.

“Unless the balance between demand and finite supplies is restored, the world will face an increasingly severe global water deficit.”

The full UN report can be found here: UN Water Report.

Next time you wash your car, do consider the needs of the 1000 children who die every day. And it goes without saying that the corporations that plunder this essential resource with no regard for human life are worse than dirt.

  1. Well if people in certain countries didn’t breed like rabbits, and certain people in other countries didn’t insist on retiring to the desert for golf there would be plenty of water.

This article conveniently misses a couple of key points about the driest inhabited continent in earth as well.

    • I can’t believe how ignorant you are. Why don’t you do some research and LEARN before you spout off. You are completely clueless about the water crisis that we face today.

      • do clarify Brian? You mean like the food crisis that could be solved tomorrow, if the poor had the money to pay for the food that the rich would rather throw away than give away!!!! same goes for water the problem is create, GREED!!!!

      • Somewhat ignorant. The first part absolutely, but the second had a good point. An average golf course consumes over 300,000 gallons per day, but in places like AZ it’s close to a million per day. All of that so 50 people in a day can play some game.

      • He is not wrong, he is just saying a part of the problem. Those gulf courses in the desert exist and are fuckin retarded but ofc its not the whole problem

      • Apparently you didn’t pay attention in 3rd grade science. 1) water is in a cycle!!! It runs off the land into lakes, rivers, and oceans. It evaporates. Then it condensates. Finally it precipitates where it runs off the land once again. 2) First Law of Matter: Matter can neither be created or destroyed!! The same H2O that was used by the first people on earth is being used by people today. It hasn’t gone anywhere (refer to point 1 ITS IN A CYCLE WHICH MUCH LIKE A CIRCLE IS NEVERENDING!!!!)
News Stories like these are government fear tactics to remind the public that we need the wisdom of these “great and powerful” government leaders get us out of these crises.

        • Is this an April Fool’s joke, or did you just get out of middle school? Water as a chemical does not vanish. The article specifies clean, safe, POTABLE water. Water, when used by humans, gets inevitably converted into a form that is unhygienic and progressively more expensive to convert back into drinkable form. The problem is with the collection and sanitation of water growing far too expensive compared to the demand, in a short duration of time, not the physical presence of water itself. In other words, the crisis is because there AREN’T ENOUGH RESOURCES TO MAKE ENOUGH WATER DRINKABLE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT. People are making water unusable faster than we are making water usable.

    • If you think overpopulation is the cause of all this, you are horribly wrong. Go look at the actual facts before spitting nonsense. And even for the rich who inhabit these dry lands, it serves just to show once more the greed of man blinded by money conveying massive amount of resources for the illnesses of a few who possess hegemony.

  2. I LOL’d at your comments.

    1. The earth is overpopulated
    2. People are being driven OUT of rural areas into population centers because of economies everywhere- Being spread out in a connected world doesn’t work.
    3. Indeed of those bastards living in the desert lived like they were in a desert, water there wouldn’t be a problem for them living in… wait for it… a desert.

  3. Rob you’ve perhaps said the most ignorant thing I’ve heard in awhile. What’s your carbon footprint? Perhaps you don’t even know what that is? Go Google it then come back and talk stupid some more.

  4. These findings are alarming, yes. But, lets consider this. There is the EXACT same amount of water on earth as their was 3,000,000 years ago. Water doesn’t go anywhere special after drink it and use it. Even the dirtiest of water can be cleaned and used again as clean drinking water. We can and do desalinize ocean water. We can and do reuse and re purpose sewage water. These chemicals used to do so aren’t at all bad for the environment. Most of them are chemicals found naturally in nature. A lot of them bacteria and microorganisms. Yes, we may face a water shortage but its nothing life threatening. We just my not be able to take long ass showers or water our yards. But we will never run out of drinking water because that is technically impossible thanks to the earth and sun.

And because I know this Comment will trigger EVERYONE, let the flame commence.

  5. Maybe if recycling water wasn’t illegal in many parts of the world, running out of good water wouldn’t be an issue.

  6. Yeah, I actually agree with you mate. the underlying problem is actually a constant and huge population increase. It is obvious that more people = more need for water, some people simply do not understand that. The population actually scares me, it’s growing at a ridiculous rate. What do people expect? “Oh, when more people are created, god will just top up the Earth’s food and water supplies and it will all be happy. The more the merrier”. That is NOT going to happen. People must pull in their heads and think logically. More people = on average, everyone will get less food and water. Not that hard to understand, is it?!

I know that we are running out of drinkable water. But the major thing that is making this issue 100 times worse is the f***ing population. The amount of water in this universe will never change, it will only be shifted from place to place. I reckon we can deal with this crisis, so long as we keep the world population well under 7.5 billion.

    • Sorry to burst your bubble but overpopulation is not the major problem contrary to what the UN suggests. It is the privatization of resources and the centralization of power by the few that is leading to those great unbalances.

For these corporations, There is no profit to be made in creating a sustainable technology that can filter water indefinitely. They would rather want to decline the overall quality of water on earth in order to rarify the product and give it an economical value. All for the sake of profit…

Expect a war on oxygen in 30 years.

  7. This has been a real problem and some people do try to deal with these issues. Check out ‘Water for People’ There might be a place you can put your energy into.

  8. This has been a growing problem for years. But, there are some groups that are concerned, and are trying to help. Check out ‘Water for People’ If you needed only one thing – water would be IT.

  9. A quote from the article: “if you believe that all this is an apocalyptic scenario that is not based on reality, such suffering has LONG plagued our world, even to this day.”

Is there really a need trying to convince ourselves God does not exist because we have in reality believed the lies of religions about God and His message in the Holy Bible, which have caused these turmoils, devastation, diseases, storms, and wars? This is about the law concerning blessings and curse!

“See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse— 27 the blessing if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known.” Deuteronomy 11:26-28 NIV

You see if obey commandments of God, we would have received His blessings and lived in peace + abundance and already made this world as God planned, a Paradise. If disobey and worship wrong god never known we will receive curse! Very simple and clear to understand. Yes, you could now say there had always been bad seasons and so on. But did God made it more clearly for all to understand?

“If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed.” Deuteronomy 28:28-61 NIV

This is that God said 3500 years ago. Does it not look like our time with many sufferings we undergo now? the prophesies of the Bible are set to be fulfilled because we do not obey commandments of God but in reality whole world reveres this brutally killed man, Jesus, as God. Our minds are fulfilled with sorrows and troubles, which blurring of seeing the reality. Writings of the Prophets of God are full of warnings to us that we should avoid, but we never listened and made same mistakes people have always done.Is this it and nothing cannot be done?

God promised to send His last prophet (Deut. 18:18-19) in time and now he is among us in person Maestro Evangelista of http://www.thename.ph or http://www.thenameonline.info He already revealed the Name of God so we could be saved on that Terrible Day of The Lord! It is fast approaching (believe or not, you will face it) as told before in Joel 2:30-32 and Zechariah 13:9

  10. Bravo Petri Molsa! Your comment was exactly what I’ve come to expect from those true believers out ther. Regardless of their particular religion, they all seem to make similarly long, rambling and nonsensical speeches of gods great power and wrath. Believe whatever keeps you warm and stupid at night mate as the only one who can save mankind is mankind.
To the people who seem to take great personal offence and are morally outraged at suggestions of overpopulation I recommend you save your first world liberal guilt for dinner parties. Your replies cry ignorance but whisper racism. It is not racist to claim the world is vastly overpopulated as it clearly is. The main offenders primarily being Asian and African countries. It’s not only water but all resources that are being placed under immense pressure by the whole planet. First and second world nations had relatively wealthy and stable governments to create infrastructure to better manage their resources. India and Pakistan are prime examples with a population of nearly a billion people each. The Ganges is the most poluted and fouled river I’ve ever seen in my life. The people dumping industrial and domestic waste, washing and defecating at the same spot they draw their water. The best thing that could happen to ease the pressure on mother earth is for an influenza epidemic to sweep the world and kill 3 or 4 billion people.

    • You made it clear. Never used your wisdom to read the message of God and instead repeat the same mantra about religions. If just open your heart and mind to understanding then would have realized God has no religion and He never send these religious preachers to spew their own opinions about the writings of the prophets of God. Apostles and followers of Jesus are a totally different gang and share the teachings of Satan.

God gave us intelligence to discern good from bad. Use your free will.
