Baseball Opens Weekend with 6-1, 9-2 Wins over #8 St. Mary's

UTPB baseball started off a three-game set out-scoring #8 St. Mary's 15-3 on the day Friday afternoon as the Falcons picked up a pair of 6-1 and 9-2 victories at Roden Field in Odessa.

UTPB played from behind both times Friday, falling behind in game one when the Rattlers scored an unearned run in the second.

The Falcons broke out the bats in their half of the third inning, scoring five runs in the frame to take a 5-1 lead. Colin Kowal tied the game at 1-1 on a single through the right side of the infield to score Nolan Schattel, and David Lee came up in the next at bat with a bases-loaded single into right to drive in David Fetkenher. Matt Reyes scored from third on the play when the ball was thrown away at the plate. Bryan Van Vranken hit a sacrifice fly into center to bring in Kowal, and Kevin Barnes layed down a perfect bunt  back up the middle on a squeeze play infield single to score Lee.

Lee drove in the team's final run in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a double into left to plate Kowal.

Lance Fairchild tossed a gem for the Falcons, earning his second win of the season in 5.2 innings. He gave up one earned run on four hits and a pair of walks and struck out four on the afternoon. Brooks Eady wrapped up the win, throwing a perfect 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

The third inning was lucky once again for UTPB as the team took the lead again in its third trip to the plate. Ty Morgan evened the game at 1-1 when he scored on a passed ball from third, and the Falcons went ahead 2-1 when Kowal doubled home Reyes.

Daniel Andrade added to the Falcon advantage in the fourth when Randal Toribio reached on a fielding error at short.

The Rattlers grabbed back an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but missed out on chances later in the game with multiple runners in scoring position.

UTPB added back to its lead when Toribio singled back up the middle in the sixth to plate Barnes.

The Falcons added five more runs in the 7th and 8th to put the lead out of reach in the final innings of the night.

Brad Paramapoonya improved to 4-1 on the season in throwing 6.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, off of seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Eady earned his first save of the season, entering with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to escape with no damage done before tossing the remainder of the game.

Toribio and Kowal each had four hits on the afternoon for UTPB and Kowal scored four times on the day. Kowal shared the team lead along side Lee with three RBI in the two games.

The Falcons look for the series sweep Saturday afternoon, closing out the weekend with St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
