Rosemont, PA – Cairn University softball earned their first wins of the 2015 season after a 5-4 comeback win in game one of the doubleheader and an 8-5 win in game two.
Kelly Hendrickson pitched for the Highlanders in game one, while
Tiffany Gower picked up the win in game two.
The Highlanders started out game one with the first run, thanks to a double by
Brigid Shehan to score
Jocelyn Good. However, Rosemont responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first and two more in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-1 lead.
Cairn started their comeback in the top of the fifth inning with a single by
Jocelyn Good to score
Rachel Clark. Later on in the inning,
Jessica Piccolo reached on an error by the short stop, which also scored
Jessica Good to cut the deficit to 4-3 Ravens.
Jessica Good then propelled the Highlanders into the lead in the top of the sixth inning with a two-RBI double to score
Rachel Clark and
Tiffany Gower. Rosemont had a chance to re-take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runners on base but the Ravens left both on base to end the game.
The Highlanders moved to 1-26 overall with the win and 1-12 in the conference. Rosemont dropped to 3-22 overall and 3-12 in the CSAC with the loss.
In game two of the doubleheader, Cairn and Rosemont matched each other run-for-run until the sixth inning when the Highlanders took the lead for the last time. The Highlanders opened with two runs in the top of the first inning but that was followed up by the Ravens with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Cairn scored two more runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead 4-2.
Jessica Piccolo contributed with two RBI and one run scored in Cairn's first four runs of the game.
Rosemont again responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning on a two-RBI double to tie the game up at 4-4. The Ravens then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run.
The Highlanders came right back in the top of the sixth inning with a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 5-5. Cairn continued to score though with the bases still loaded on a sacrifice fly by
Kelly Hendrickson; 6-5.
Brigid Shehan sealed the deal for Cairn with a bases-clearing triple to lead 8-5.
Cairn kept Rosemont off the board for the seventh inning to take their second win of the season to move to 2-26 overall and 2-12 in the conference. Shehan led the Highlanders with three hits and two RBI. Piccolo followed with two hits and two RBI.
The Highlanders will next play on Monday, Apr. 20, at Baptist Bible College at 3 p.m.
