The Grateful Dead

Earlier this year, we heard rumblings that Martin Scorsese might be working on a film about legendary punk rock band The Ramones, but there's yet to be any official confirmation that will happen. However, another iconic rock band will have Scorsese's attention as THR reports he is executive producing a documentary about the psychedelic rock group The Grateful Dead. The documentary will arrive just in time for the 50th anniversary of the band once led by the late Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, and it will cover the entire career of the beloved band. Sounds like the ultimate must-see for the Deadheads out there.

The documentary still doesn't have a title, but it does have one hell of a director in Amir Bar-Lev, the man behind the acclaimed 2010 documentary The Tillman Story. The filmmaker has been trying to get this doc off the ground for about 10 years now, and it's finally coming together, with help from 50 years of footage and more from longtime band archivist David Lemieux. There will be old interviews, concerts and more on display, plus new footage from the surviving bandmates Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Phil Lesh. Scorsese is a huge fan of rock music, and he couldn't be happier about this project:

"The Grateful Dead were more than just a band. They were their own planet, populated by millions of devoted fans. I’m very happy that this picture is being made and proud to be involved."

This won't be Scorsese's first time working on a rock documentary as he's previously worked on projects featuring The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and George Harrison, and they've all been pretty damn great. The Grateful Dead has a huge following, so there's no doubt that this will be a big event film for all the fans out there. Even for those who aren't fans of the band, this could be a great insight into the wild psychedelic rock scene that thrived in the 1960s. With 50 years of footage, this could probably span more than a single film, but we'll see what they can fit into it next year. Sound good?

So unbelievable that Scorsese is attached to this project. The Dead really were more than a band, there lasting impact in the centre of the counterculture still resonates today and many don't know their significance or why. Cannot wait - from a young film buff and deadhead.

I never got the Grateful Dread but I know of so many older people who treat them like a lifestyle.
