Appearing in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships Sweet 16 for the first time in school history, the Aurora University Spartans and Centre College played a dramatic match that ended in penalty kicks, on a different field than the one the two overtime contest was played on.
Trailing by one in the final seconds of the game, AU found themselves with a corner kick that was taken by senior
Brittany Roydhouse. The send in found the head of senior
Lorelei Ritzert who headed the ball into the back of the Centre goal to tie the game 1-1 with 17 seconds left on the game clock.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, Centre struck first early in the second half. Centre's Anne Mitchell sent in a ball from a good distance out and with the aid of a gusty wind at the University of Chicago, the ball snuck past the out stretched arms of AU goalkeeper
Rachael Warnock.
After the dramatic goal by Ritzert sent the Spartan crowd into a frenzy, the contest went into overtime with the daylight dwindling away. AU had the only shot in the first overtime with Ritzert having a header saved by the Centre goalkeeper.
The second overtime, played in darkening conditions saw each team have a quality scoring chance but neither found the back of the net.
With light becoming an issue, AU Head Coach
Troy Edwards and his Centre College counterpart along with the game staff of the NCAA and University of Chicago agreed to move the playing field to Stagg Field, home of the Chicago football team, for the shootout session.
After both teams, game personnel and the crowd found their way a little less than a block away from the initial game site, the penalty kick's ensued. AU made four of the five shots they attempted but were out done by Centre who converted all five of their chances to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
The contest goes in the books as a tie with Centre advancing on PK's 5-4. The Spartan women's soccer team finishes the 2014 season with a
19-3-2 overall record.
