Impact, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

StartupSB hosts a unique look at the driving forces behind Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Impact around the world, in the US and on our Central Coast.

The evening will start with a networking reception at the beautiful Santa Barbara Natural History Museum and launch in to an inspirational presentation and discussion.

We’ll be joined by Julie Lenzer-Kirk, Director of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship under the United States Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration, who will speak about her current role at the White House, and her past experiences leading economic growth on the east coast, including innovative Startup Maryland programs, and launching the Maryland center for entrepreneurship and the Maryland Conscious Venture Lab.

Phil Graves Patagonia’s Director of Corporate Development who oversees Patagonia’s $20 Million & Change corporate venture capital investment fund, Nathalie Gensac, Founder of Media4Good (M4G) and Youth Interactive and Jim Villanueva, Executive Director of The Eleos Foundation, will join Julie for a discussion on impact entrepreneurship and innovation and talk about their perspectives on fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, and sparking impact driven ventures in communities around the globe.  Read more about the panelists below.

The evening will draw attention to impact driven entrepreneurship in our own community and the campaign to launch the Impact Hub Santa Barbara.

Director of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship under the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration.

Award winning entrepreneur, author, and sought-after speaker, Julie Lenzer Kirk is a catalyst for economic creation through innovation. She is passionate about helping entrepreneurs start and grow and helping them think bigger and achieve more than they think they can.

Julie was recently appointed by U.S Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker as the Director of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship under the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration. Prior to her appointment, she was the Executive Director for the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship, located in Howard County, Maryland, where she focusing her energies on igniting an entrepreneurial culture while working to generate collaboration to bring together the regional entrepreneurial eco-system. Phil GravesPhil Graves
Director of Corporate Development, Patagonia Works

Phil Graves is Patagonia Works’ Director of Corporate Development. As Director of Corporate Development, Phil oversees the $20 Million & Change corporate venture capital investment fund. Phil also chairs Patagonia’s New Business Council of key employees focused on support for new emerging business opportunities.

Phil originally hails from Texas and has a background in business valuation and M&A. He has a masters in finance and undergrad in accounting from Texas A&M University and his CPA and CFA credentials. Together with his wife, he has three beautiful daughters (Lily 5, Ruby 3, and Shiloh 2 months). Phil is an Eagle Scout, outdoorsman, surfer, and at home on the range.

Founder of Media4Good (M4G) and Youth Interactive.

Social entrepreneur Natalie Gensac founded the production based organization in 2005 to use the power of media to reach out to a new generation of intelligent givers—people who need to know and SEE for themselves that their contributions will truly make a sustainable difference.

Serving at risk youth has been at the heart of Media4Good’s efforts since our organization founded Youth Interactive in 2008. Youth Interactive Santa Barbara is an after-school entrepreneurial center serving – TEA – Technology, Entrepreneurship & Arts. With the objectives clear, Gensac found a new way forward – media, business, visionary foundations and partnerships to help provide a positive, responsible approach to aid.

Gensac’s core focus is to use media for transparency and support the two groups essential to social and economic advancement in our world today: women and children.

Jim Villanueva
Executive Director Eleos Foundation

Jim is a longtime entrepreneur and investor in growth companies, and has led the development of the Eleos impact investment portfolio since its inception. He has served at Eleos as a founding board member, Investment Director, and most recently as Executive Director.

Over the course of his career with several private equity partnerships, Jim invested in multiple industries across North and South America. Previously, he co-founded and sold a Spanish-language media company and a national Hispanic marketing and public relations firm.

Jim holds an MBA degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and graduated with honors from Harvard College.

Kyle Ashby
Instigator at StartupSB

As the driving force behind StartupSB, Kyle Ashby, spends his time talking with entrepreneurs, startups and technologists.

Kyle is also the founder of Kaldera, an advisory firm that focuses on strategy, creative innovation, branding, marketing and community building for startups, technology, and software companies.

Kyle also contributes to the business and academic communities as a Startup Weekend/Up Global organizer and global facilitator and as a member of the board of directors for the Clean Business Investment Summit and a member of the Advisory Group for Antioch’s Socially responsible MBA program.
