At this time of the year we call it trick or treating, but any other time it would be called begging. So when you’re done begging for candy, (or eating the candy your kid begged for), don’t be afraid to take in a show. Danny Elfman’s Music from The Films of Tim Burton — Danny Elfman hops to the podium to sing songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas as conductor John Mauceri leads the Hollywood Studio Symphony and choir through melodies from Tim Burton’s singular oeuvre including selections from Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and many more. At the Nokia Theatre through Nov. 1.

It’s up to the audience to figure out as she leads them town the twisty path of her sordid and silly past in this critically-acclaimed play set in Appalachia and written entirely in verse. Fridays and Saturdays at the Fountain Theatre through Nov. 30.
Scream! — A spoof of the 1996 horror classic, this over-the-top musical retelling camps it up with buckets of blood and a chorus of Screamettes donning the iconic mask that used to spell doom but now spells delirium. Written and directed by television writers, Michael Gans and Richard Register (Make It or Break It), Scream! stars Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) as Sidney, along with Missi Pyle (Gone Girl), Christine Lakin (Melissa & Joey) and Nicole Parker (MADtv). Part of The UnAuthorized Musical Parody Series at The Rockwell in East Hollywood, Scream! runs Friday and Saturday through Dec. 6.

Re-Animator – The Musical — H.P. Lovecraft’s hyperbolic tale of a brilliant young medical student, played by Graham Skipper (Almost Human), who creates a serum that can bring the dead back to life gets the song-and-dance treatment in this revival. What the would-be doctor hopes will be a medical breakthrough instead results in hideous monstrosities and ghoulish consequences directed by Stuart Gordon, who helmed the original movie. Fridays through Sundays at the Steve Allen Theater through Nov. 23.
So You Think You Can Be a Vampire — Young Brenda (Erin Treanor) is so obsessed with vampire lore that she decides to become one. Her key to immortality is real-life bloodsucker, Fino, whom she meets on the internet, but it comes with a heavy price – forsaking all her worldly friends and possessions. Can bff Georgette save Brenda from the perilous fangs of immortality? Fridays and Saturdays at The Eclectic Company Theatre through Dec. 6.
Dia de los Muertos? — a block party featuring Louie Cruz Beltran and his Latin Jazz Orchestra. Enjoy mariachi, folklorico dance troops, homemade tamales, face painting, crafts booths and a graveyard where you can make your own altar for the dearly departed. 24th Street Theatre, November 1 from 6-10 p.m.
