A big surprise for me the other day when I had just opened the shop and in walks Salvino Benanti. So naturally - we had to have a special Saturday night tasting with them, for me, Benanti is like family - over the years we have had so many wonderful and educational tastings with them and any opportunity to open their wines and share with you we jump at, so Salvino enthusiastically agreed to join us for a tasting of his iconic and classic wines of Mt Etna! Benanti's wines have been staples at biondivino for years, their wines at every level are among the best out there, from their basic Etna Rosso to their high end crus. They also make one of the best whites in Sicily, that has an incredible ability to age beautifully, from a signle vineyard of 80 year old carricante vines. Saturday you can try them all!
Both of the whites are from eastern side of Mt. Etna, near Caselle. This is the best area for the Carricante grape, and the only place where Etna Bianco Superiore may be produced. The Serra della Contesa red is also from this area, the lowest altitude cru on the eastern side. By contrast, Rovitello is from the northern side, on the mid slope, a vineyard made up of sand and volcanic ash.
We're always excited to taste Benanti's latest creations. Saturday will be a treat from long time fans of these wines, and if you haven't tried them yet, this is one not to miss!
