Venture Scouts, Foley woman donate 30 backpacks filled with items for homeless

To Becca Michelle the homeless are not invisible. In fact, the homeless population in Baldwin and Mobile County inspired Michelle, an Alabama School of Math and Science graduate, to take some action.

"As a cross country runner, I would often pass the homeless on my runs.  Seeing them struggle made me want to help," said Michelle.

She along with the Venture Scouts began asking for donations from the community and received great responses.  The items collected were stuffed into 30 backpacks for those less fortunate. On Monday, Michelle along with members of the Venture Scouts delivered 30 backpacks to the Outpouring Center on North McKenzie Street in Foley, Ala. Michelle orchestrated a backpack giveaway after noticing the level of poverty in parts of the community.

"I would like to thank the group for their hard work and their generosity, and their support of The Salvation Army and our mission.  We will make sure that the backpacks go to people who need them" said Lt. Jeremy Lind of Venture Scouts.

Before some local media, Michelle said, "To me, the homeless are not invisible at at all, and I knew they needed simple things the rest of us take for granted." The bags were stuffed with soap, towels, some food, and other hygiene products.
