PARKER, Colo. — On Memorial Day, many will take time to thank those who have served, but a local veteran contacted the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers because he wants to extend a thank you of his own.

Roger Voelkli is a 95-year-old World War II veteran who has always appreciated Memorial Day.

“I’m a military man. I still am,” Voelkli said. “It’s my day of thinking.”

Voelklii was stationed at an airbase in Italy during World War II. He was an Army lieutenant working in support of the Air Force, which often meant responding to crash landings at the airstrip.

“The main thing was get the pilot,” Voelkli said. “We didn’t care about the airplane, just get the pilot out. We saved seven pilots by just going in there before they got burned up too bad.”

Though he enjoys sharing stories about his service, his most recent story came in response to it.

“I didn’t expect it,” Voekli said. “She says I want to thank you.”

Voelkli was eating at Texas Roadhouse in Parker with his daughter when an woman and her husband approached the table. They had seen his WWII veteran hat and didn’t just say thank you. They also left a card at the table.

“I didn’t know what the hell it was,” Voelkli said. “But it’s worth $50. I thought that was pretty damn nice of them.”

It was even nicer that he didn’t need to use the card to pay his bill. Another couple took care of that.

“(The waiter) said, ‘It’s already paid for,’” Voelkli said. “I said, ‘Well, who the hell paid for it?’ The waiter said, ‘That second booth down, but they’re gone already.’”

“It just touched my heart,” said Voelkli’s daughter, Linda Kubly. “We didn’t have any way of knowing who these kind souls were who were acknowledging his service.”

That’s when they decided to reach out to the Problem Solvers.

“Call me or write to me and just let me know who you are,” Voelkli said. “I’d just like them to know how grateful I am.”

Grateful for a day and a story, he won’t soon forget.

“It almost brought tears to your eyes because you think back to these things,” Voelkli said. “It brings tears to your eyes.”
