Hiker rescued, Emerald Creek Falls (East of Mareeba)

At about 2.50pm today, local police were called to assist other emergency Services to retrieve a 23-year-old woman from the Emerald Creek Falls walking track, which is situated about 15km east of Mareeba.

The New South Wales woman had been hiking with three female friends when she left the walking track, slipped and fell approximately 10 meters into shallow rock pool.

Her friends rescued the unconscious woman from the water and called emergency services.

Crews accessed the steep terrain on foot and treated the now conscious woman for head and suspected spinal injuries.

Vehicle access was impossible due to the rough terrain and the site was not suitable for helicopter landing.

Police and emergency service personnel attended and extraction arrangements were made.

The woman was winched by a helicopter at 7.30pm tonight and transported to Cairns Hospital for further medical treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
