West Georgia Completes Sweep

Wolves Take Two Wins on Saturday

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia used late inning rallies to complete a three-game sweep of the Lee baseball team, 8-1, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action on Cole Field.

In the opening game, the Flames and wolves were deadlocked at 1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The home club exploded for four runs in the seventh and then tagged on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to claim the 8-1 victory.

Dustin Lawson started for the Flames and allowed just two hits and one earned run. He walked four and fanned four. Jacob Potts came on in the seventh and gave up two earned runs and was charged with the defeat. Ryan Zimmer, Dakota Fowler and Grayson Bailey also hurled in the loss.

The top of the order did the damage for the Wolves. Tyler Hutch had two hits and a pair of RBI. Sumner McWhorter was perfect at the dish delivering a pair of doubles and two singles. He also collected two RBI and scored twice.

The Flames managed only four hits in the loss. Siosi Poti had two hits and scored a run, while Nate Wierzgac and Ben Holland had the Flames' other hits.

Jamie Sexton picked up his fourth win of the year against one loss. He worked eight innings and allowed Lee's only run. He walked one and struck out four. Ethan Hunter pitched the final inning for the Wolves.

In the second game, the Flames scored a single run in the first inning but the Wolves bounced right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Flames tied the contest at 3 in the third but a three-run sixth inning spelled defeat for Lee.

MJ Brown blasted a two-run homer in the third inning to help the Flames tie the contest. He finished the afternoon with two hits in three trips to the plate and knocked in all three of Lee's runs. Poti had a hit and scored a run, while Travis Perkola had two hits and Luke Toms picked up Lee's other hit. Ben Holland scored a run in the loss.

Artemis Kabhodaian stroked a double and two singles plus knocking in two runs for the Wolves. McWhorter continued to swing the big bat with a pair of hits, two runs scored and a RBI.

Chevis Hoover pitched two innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, striking out three and walking two. Rob Gustitus came on for 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and no earned runs. He registered three strikeouts and walked one. Kyle Briner was charged with the loss. In 1 2/3 innings he walked a pair and allowed one earned run.

A.J. Sunstrom hurled three innings for the Wolves. He gave up five hits and three earned runs. Brandon Goldsmith picked up the win after going four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three Flames.

The three wins this weekend improved West Georgia's record to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in GSC play. The Flames dropped to 11-4-1 and 3-4-1 against conference competition.

"Our inability to combat the big inning was the difference today," pointed out coach Mark Brew. "Once again, our defense was not very good and though the pitchers pitched well in certain spots they gave up too many freebies in those big innings. Give West Georgia credit. They outplayed us in every phase of the game this weekend. It's extremely difficult to win on the road, but it becomes impossible when you play to the level we did this weekend.

"We have little time to sulk. We have an opportunity with Tennessee Temple (Tuesday) to prepare for a big weekend at West Alabama."
