Clonakilty is hosting a free lunch . . . and everyone’s invited

‘Food Rescue’ event aims to highlight the issue of food waste and demonstrate how it can be avoided by cooking lunch with ‘expired’ ingredients

A free lunch with a difference is on offer in Clonakilty, Co Cork next Sunday, February 1st. Adam Medcalf, head chef at Inchydoney Lodge and Spa and Richy Virishwamy, head chef at Richy's Restaurant and Bistro will be cooking up a feast with ingredients that would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Scally’s SuperValu and Harte’s Spar in the town are donating ingredients whose sell by dates have recently expired, but are perfectly safe to eat, or are somehow unfit for display on their shelves and baskets due to being overripe, bruised or just “too ugly” to conform to customers’ expectations.

It's being billed as a Food Rescue, and is supported by the GIY movement and Clonakilty Tidy Towns. Trashed, the documentary in which Jeremy Irons addresses the scale of global waste and the devastation caused by it, will be shown, and there will be a talk on waste food composting. All events are free to attend. Lunch will be served at 12.30pm at O'Donovan's Hotel, and it's open to all comers, as long as the food lasts.
