Flames Place Fourth in NCCAA

Davis, Sliger Earn All-American Status

Taylor Davis moves to next shot and was named NCCAA All-American

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The Lee men's golf team slipped to fourth-place in the final round of the NCCAA National Championship on Wednesday at the 6,613 yard par-72 Hombre Golf Club.

After rounds of 292 and 299 the Flames slid to 311 to finish with a 902-team total. The Lee men claimed the program's first national championship last season, but came up short in their bid for a repeat.

"This certainly wasn't what we were hoping for today," said coach John Maupin shortly after his club left the course. "I felt really good about the position we were in starting the day. The guys have played so well this semester. It is just unfortunate to end the fall season with this kind of round."

Colorado Christian (892) fired a final round 303 to claim the title finishing five-strokes better than second-place Oklahoma Christian (897). Dallas Baptist followed with a 901-total to clip the Lee squad by one.

Taylor Davis led the way for the Flames with a 4-over 76 in round three. Davis shot a 3-under par 69 to open the championship but carded a 76 in the final two rounds to finish in third-place with a 221. Peyton Sliger followed right behind as he ended with a 77 222-total and placed fourth overall. Both players were named NCCAA All-Americans.

Matt Strube (226) and Corey Sheppard (234) each shot a 79 while Ryne Thompson rounded out the scoring with an 85 (241).

"We had a lot of trouble getting four scores together," added Maupin. "We've got too much depth to have to count the kind of scored we did in this tournament. We also didn't minimize damage very well; too many big numbers. These guys accomplished a lot of good things this fall and we really wanted this one. We will just have to use it as motivation during the off season."

David Ryan (Oklahama Wesleyan) won the individual title with a final round 75 (216) finishing three-strokes better than Josh Aguilar of Dallas Baptist.
