The Wicklow brewery

@ Mickey Finn’s Pub

Looking for something different... The Craft Beer revolution is currently at its peak with micro breweries setting up throughout the country. Our vision is to create that perfect destination in a rural location, where you can absorb the essence of our beer in an authentic Beer Hall surrounded by the Brew House, Fermentation Tanks and Barley Mill where the actual beer is produced. Our initial beers BREWERY produced will be a Wicklow Helles (Lager), Wicklow Weiss (Wheat Beer) and ‘St.Kevin’s’ Red Ale. We will then add an Amber Ale, Pale Ale and IPA to our Product line. We have acquired the expertise of a Bavarian Brew master to brew our beer using our own local well water. Our authentic rustic Beer Hall is complete with stage for ‘Hooley in the Brewery nights’. Combine this atmosphere with some Deluxe Finger Food Platters from the Brewery Bistro and you’ve got a night to remember. We envisage the Brewery to become that perfect venue for those looking for ‘something a little bit different’. We offer Wedding Packages with Honeymoon suites in our romantic ‘TreeHouse Glamping ‘ area. All in all it’s not just a beer, its the journey of the local farmer to the brewery to you. We look forward to meeting you in Redcross and taking you on our journey.

RADIATOR PLUS heating radiators & accessories

Add elegance and strength to your modern home with one of our stainless steel radiators As an approved installer of the HONE Thermal Energy System, Ecoflex Energy recognises the importance you place on an efficient, timely and pro professional installation. Ecoflex Energy is a division of Ecoflex Limited which has a trading history of more than 20 years in contracting and building works throughout Ireland. The Surface Power HONE Central Heating and Hot Water Hybrid System uses Daylight as its main source of power. Your existing Boiler becomes a backup to the system during times of heavier use. Your boiler is now only required to maintain water temperature during periods of heavy use as opposed to lifting the water temperature (this uses most of the energy in a non HONE system), this produces savings on your energy bills of up to 78%. The HONE Hybris System is a very simple installation. It integrates easily and simply into your new or existing building or home. Even small houses have enough space for HONE. Each HONE system is designed specifically for the home into which it will be installed. As a master installer Ecoflex Energy Consultants, System Surveyors and Installers are all trained and spcialise in HONE.

“Speak to the experts” The right bed/ mattress is the most important item of furniture in your home. So always seek guidance in choosing the right one. A good starting point is to start with the level of firmness; soft, medium or firm. A rule of thumb is light build - soft mattress,Medium build - medium mattress and Large build - firm Mattress. Remember that people generally want something similar to what they currently sleep on with extra padding.

Check your existing bed before visiting a showroom. Check the size, and even take a picture of the model to show the bed specialist when you get to the showroom. Consider moving your bed to a guest room and upgrading yours by increasing or decreasing the size of your bed. Don't be shy about laying on the mattresses for a while as it's going to be a 10/15 year experience! At Flanagan Kerins we've been serving generations, P.S. Exciting new Red Bird Cafe now open. Whether it is fine dining, live music or other forms of entertainment that you are after, Wicklow has the ideal venues just waiting to be explored. W

icklow has a strong tradition of offering authentic local entertainment across the county, and depending on what you are seeking, you will never be too far from a suitable spot to get your fill. Whether you want to experience the ‘high life’ in one of Ireland’s highest pubs (Johnnie Fox’s – which is not surprisingly located high in the mountains on the Dublin-Wicklow border), or you are looking for something a little more grounded, such

as the urban offerings of renowned venues in Bray or Wicklow Town, Wicklow is brimming with fantastic examples of the customary Irish entertainment and dining experience! Wherever you end up, nightly offerings of traditional music & entertainment as well as local and adventurous dishes are sure to satisfy your every need. And here at In Wicklow, we have taken a tour of the best that is on offer and have painstakingly compiled a definitive guide with all of the essential information that will help point you towards exactly what you are looking for when it comes to the perfect venue for a memorable night out here in the county.

J

ohnnie Fox’s is known as the historical museum style venue which you MUST experience, traditional live music and dance shows and it’s large multi cultural menu based heavily on seafood, quality steaks and the most succulent lamb around.

Well guess what? JFP is all a flutter with changes in the air, their head chef moved on after many happy years and the sous chef rose to the challenge, Aykan Arslan has already been with the pub for seven years and has now taken up the mantle of head chef, JFP are very impressed with his plans for changes and menu upgrades in and around September. The new staff uniforms and training managers are also seeing some changes in service, whilst others are cutting back still on service JF are turning the tables so to speak, are putting extra staff on busy shifts so that they are not just “coping” with the volume of people but still maintaining friendly greetings and service. The family who own and operate the pub are proud that the staff have been with them for so many years but believe new fresh staff are also a must to keep a vibrancy as well as the traditional style service. The bar also has some changes, possibly the most interesting being the true Irish craft beers (on draught also) and wide range of craft whiskey’s with taster platters for both so that you and your guests get a real “taste” of true Ireland. Pop along and try the Teelings Whiskey or a pint of Galway Hooker, neither will fail to tingle the taste buds.

Johnnie Fox’s Pub – rise above it at the highest pub in Ireland!

First on the list is Powerscourt Waterfall, Irelands’ largest, as you climb high through Crone Wood the view into the waterfall opens up. As you leave the forest you enter the open mountain with amazing views east over the Irish Sea. Djouce Mountain looms high above you to the right as you skirt along just below the summit. Heatley family since 1914 and is an idyllic setting for a Victorian themed festival with the Sugarloaf Mountain providing an amazing backdrop and the views of the coastline sparkling in the distance are stunning. The Festival attracts over 4,000 people each year. The 2014 Enniskerry Victorian Field Day takes place on Sunday 14th September. Come along in Victorian costume; it adds to the spirit of the day and you will be in with a chance to win magnificent prizes in our ‘Best Dressed’ Competition. The Festival is organised entirely by

dedicated volunteers and the local parishes of Enniskerry. Each year the proceeds of the day are divided between the joint parishes and a national charity organisation. The club provides a wide range of sporting, educational and essential support services to members across Leinster. ‘In Lakers we passionately believe that each member is unique, has their own abilities and is entitled to the opportunity for a better future.’ Bray Lakers

Blessington is blended perfectly into the surrounds of the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. The town itself, with a population of just over 5,000 people, allows for intimate and relaxed exploration. And there is plenty to experience in the area. Sites such as the iconic Russborough House are easily accessible and, importantly, visitor friendly! Also, the natural landscape lends itself to gentle and relaxed exploration, with an extensive array of engaging walks

and numerous delightful vistas to be experienced. Blessington is not just all-natural beauty though, as the town itself is a bustling mini-metropolis, with plenty of options for both

leisurely shopping and dining. A diverse range of cafes, bars and restaurants is aptly dotted around the town, between the older buildings that are rich in history and the modern town. Being a stone’s throw from the capital and also County Wicklow, Blessington also lends itself perfectly to escaping the chaos of more busy locations, while not skimping on value or choice! So come on down to Blessington this summer to explore this hidden gem!

Wholesome aromas will draw you into Jenny and Richard Street’s smashing cafe, which retained its name when re-locating from the charming village of Grangecon to the bustle of Blessington. everything on the menu is made on the premises, including the breads, pastries and ice cream; the ham hocks for the quiche lorraine are cooked here, the pork meat used in the sausage rolls is organic, fruit and vegetables come from Castleruddery organic farm, and all other ingredients are of the very best quality, many of them also organic and/or free range. The menu is fairly brief, but that’s the beauty of it, allowing the cooking to be this good, and flavours superb: the quiche, for example, is a little classic and comes with a scrumptious salad; similarly moist, freshly-baked brown bread arrives with home cooked ham, farmhouse cheese (Sheridan’s) and home-made chutney, also garnished with salad: simple and excellent – not for the first time, we say: why aren’t there more places like this? delicious chilled Crinnaughton apple juice from Cappoquin, is offered, and B-Y-o wine is fine. Luscious Illy coffee to finish and maybe a slice of chocolate cake. Seats 30, toilets wheelchair accessible, Children welcome (high chair, baby changing facilities). open all day Mon-Wed, 9am-4pm; Thu-Sat, 9am-5pm; party service. Closed Sun, Bank Hols

The West Wicklow House is situated on the main street of Blessington village, located on the N81 route, midway between Dublin and Baltinglass. Our vibrant pub, known locally as ‘The

Seefin Passage Grave

More interesting and more exciting to the general visitor are tombs known as Passage-Graves, which are set in round earthen tombs. The chamber is approached with two stones bearing concentric diamond-like motifs resembling the human face. The burial chamber has two side-chambers on each side and one at the back. On the roof stone of the chamber near the entrance bears a decoration consisting of five lines. The grave has probably been open for a long time, as an Early Christian equal-armed cross can be seen on one of the roofing stones. Being situated on the top of a mountain, a climb up to it is worth it for the view alone. This Passage is situated on the summit of Seefin and is best reached from just south of Kilbridge Military Camp along the edge of the forest.

June Blake’s Garden For the last eleven years June Blake has devoted her time to creating an exciting, experimental and contemporary garden. It is set in the heart of West Wicklow in the grounds of an early Victorian steward’s house and farmyard surrounded by mature trees

and meadows. The gardens extend over approximately three acres and contain an eclectic collection of plants from around the world including areas of exciting, bold herbaceous planting and a shade garden of ferns, grasses bamboos and other choice woodland plants punctuated by enormous gran-

ite boulders. There is a shallow, linear reflecting pool set amidst exuberant tropical and prairie planting. The latest addition is a minimalist courtyard offering a space of austere tranquillity in contrast to the lavish exuberance of the surrounding gardens. The various elements of the garden include: The Garden Entrance, The Woodland Garden, Reflecting Pools & Hot Beds, Prarie Beds, The Courtyard & The Nursery. The gardens are open every Wednesday to Sunday from 11am – 5.30pm. Why not book a personal guided tour and enjoy a cup of coffee and some homemade treats in the new Courtyard? June also hosts garden talks and garden consultations and design by appointment. June also offers luxury self-catering accommodation in recently restored 19th Century farm building.

Relax and lose yourself in our maze at Russborough We ask for a nominal fee of €3 for all those who dare to try to find their way! €3 only .The maze is yet another fascinating feature at Russborough. Planted in 1989 and designed by Adrian Fisher and Rondoll Coate of Minotaur Designs the design reveals a clue to the identity of its owners, the Beits. Since Sir Alfred’s family were early pioneers of the diamond trade the centre of the maze leads to a diamond shape. A statue of Cupid stands proudly on a column at the centre. There is a beautiful view of the maze from the upstairs bathroom window of the house on the tour which is well worth a look. If you are attempting the maze at Russborough make sure you get a map at reception and bring your mobile phone with you in case you lose your way! Sport FocuS

Although the World Cup is finished, there is plenty to keep the interest of expecting football fans as August begins with the return of Premier League Football! And it is already shaping up to be one of the more interesting seasons, with numerous pre-season storylines already emerging; can the arrival of Van Gaal revitalise Manchester United and return the Red Devils to the glory times that fans had become accustomed to? How will ‘life after Suarez’ treat Liverpool? And, how many more of their top players will Southampton sell? Well, we won’t have to wait long to find out the answers, with the Premier League starting back on the 16th of August. We’ve put together a complete fixture guide for the whole of this month so you can be sure not to miss out on any of the action.

August

Premier League

Away from football, August is also a big month for boxing with two key bouts being staged. We preview both Porter vs Brook (IBF Welterweight Title) and the Dublin contest between Macklin and Heiland (Middleweight) at the end of the month. And this month also sees the culmination of the hard-court tennis season at the US Open, with Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams defending their respective titles at Flushing Meadows in New York from the 25th of August.

injury and unless he plays the week before Flushing Meadows, it will be very difficult to see him retain his title. Rafa won’t have played competitively since losing to Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon in early July and, in the modern game, getting on for two months without a tournament and then expecting to play well enough to win a Grand Slam is asking a lot. Djokovic is the stand-out player, whereas has his peers currently have question marks against their name, and he is expected to dominate on the hardcourt – which, despite his Wimbledon win, remains his best surface. Federer would be the No 2 in our pecking order because of what he produced on the grass and hopefully a short rest has left him

motivated ahead of the next portion of the season.

Kiko Martinez

vs Carl Frampton Rematch set for September 6th, Belfast Carl Frampton will get his first crack at a world title against a familiar face on September 6 in Belfast, when he faces IBF super bantamweight titlist Kiko Martinez. Carl Frampton has been angling for a world title fight since 2012, with the discussion really kickstarting after an impressive TKO9 win over Kiko Martinez in 2013. As luck would have it, it will be Martinez defending

Sport FocuS the IBF super bantamweight title. Frampton (18-0, 13 KO) has emerged as one of the best 122-pound fighters in the world, denying skeptics and naysayers. Frampton, 27, will be the favored man going into this fight, given that he convincingly won their first encounter, but Martinez (31-4, 23 KO) says he’s never gotten that loss out of his mind, and a chance at revenge has him motivated.

Shawn Porter Vs Kell Brook Porter expects to defeat Brook and wants Mayweather or Thurman next! Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) will be taking on Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) at the StubHub Center on August 16 in Carson, CA. Porter says he’s studied Kell Brook’s past fights and sees a good, technically sound fighter who’s also very basic, he’s confident he has the tools and experience to dispatch Brook and move on to bigger things, namely Floyd Mayweather.

EURO 2016 QUALIFYING Sunday Sept 7th, 2014: Georgia v Rep. of Ireland Ireland will compete in Group D with Germany, Poland, Georgia, Scotland and Gibraltar. Ireland beat Georgia on the both occasions we faced them in qualification for the 2010 World Cup but they proved difficult rivals. Robbie Keane scored a hat-trick when we beat the Georgians 4-0 in a friendly last year.

Funded by The Department of Environment Community and Local Government PURE was established to combat illegal dumping/ fly-tipping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. The project was officially launched in September 2006. Since the establishment of the PURE project, the lo-call-phone-line 1850 365 121, and the PURE office, have received over 6,600 reports of illegal dumping resulting in the collection over 6,400 individual dumping sites and the removal of approximately 2,188 tonnes of rubbish from the landscape. If you were to put all of this rubbish into standard household rubbish bags you would fill over 311,000 bags. If you lined up each of the bags that PURE has removed from the uplands they would stretch over 300 kilometres in length, which is longer than a journey from Glendalough to Cork City. The project also established a number of initiatives to create awakenings of illegal dumping. One such project is The PURE Mile competition which encourages communities in Wicklow to keep a mile stretch of road (approx. 1.6 km), and the immediate environment litter/rubbish free. At present over 30 communities and people living in rural areas are extremely busy cleaning up their areas, taking part in regular litter picks and cleanups, researching information about their local wild flowers, plants, trees, animals, built heritage, history and the folklore associated with their areas. A large number of communities go the extra mile by repairing and painting old traditional gates, rebuilding stone walls, improving stiles, maintaining bridges, cleaning up farmlands and entrances, erecting bat and bird boxes, and holding information nights and talks about their local areas. 2014 is the fifth year of the PURE Mile competition and now over 70 communities and groups have taken part. Each of the PURE Miles has something unique to offer and in the past the competition has seen a variety of discoveries, from megalithic tombs, standing stones, ogham stones, mass rocks, freshly painted gates, new fencing erected, Celtic calendars, forgotten milk stands, recording of field names, local stories – legends and characters, historical buildings, churches, information on wild flowers – edible plants and foraging, old and new culinary recipes, information on forgotten archaeological

The PURE project is a partnership project and the first of its kind in Ireland which incorporates statutory and non-statutory organisations, including; Wicklow County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, South Dublin County Council, Coillte, National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Wicklow Uplands Council. features and cultural heritage of areas, and of course all litter free roads, ditches, rivers and fields, which resulted in the removal of hundreds of bags of rubbish. PURE also run two extremely successful secondary school training programmes, PURE ANIMATION AND PURE MUSIC. These training programme introduce teenagers to important environmental issues that are related to The PURE Project, e.g., illegal dumping, litter, fly-tipping, recycling, pollution, etc., all done through the medium of animation and music. To date Pure Animation has produced 16 short animated films screening at both national and international film festivals, including; Cork, Limerick, Dublin, California, Corfu, London, New York, Poland, winning numerous awards a long the way.
