of BUDDHA DHARMA / OBF INTERNATIONAL,
on August 30, our Dharma Art Director Mangala Konchok Norbu celebrated HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
We all wish him great health, happiness, prosperity and love .

May your Visual Dharma works benefit many sentient beings, Vajra brother Mangala .

In this Dharma teachings we bring trascription of MEDICINE BUDDHA EMPOWERMENT given by venerable Lho Kunsansang Rinpoche from Tibet at Rime Dharma Choeling in Graz, Austria (Autumn 1996). This empowerment was recorded by Mangala Konchok Norbu , translation from Tibetan by dr. Andrea Loseries / Leick .
I. INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY BUDDHIST STUDIES
Homage to Medicine Buddhas .

Rinpoche said 1.” Before initiation we must make preparations : purification of body , speech and mind , to receive empowerment . We wash ourselves by taking purified water from the Vase with initiation deity who transforms water into nectar .
2. Second preparation consist of torma offering , made from corns . This removes obstacles from invisible beings like spirits, demons, elements . Torma is transformed into mantra . It is offering to these beings what they need. These beings are asked not to create obstacles during initiation .

3. Third preparation consist of Vajra tent with five wisdoms.
There is a legend described in the text : In Pure land of Medicine Buddha there is a special tree which is emanaton of Manjushri. Bodhisattvas gave the vow to release the suffering of sentient beings, like Bodhisattva Vajrapani . This transmission came to human world through Manjushri who appeared to an adept in a vision . One transmission came to Bonpo Bodhisattva and to elder Bodhisattva who came to Tibet during the time of king Trisong Detsen . He received this empowerment as described in old tantras (i.e. Nyingma). These are Sky treasures and earth treasures of terton Mingyur Dorje . This initiation consist of Mind treasure of Mingyur Dorje tantras . It is Ati yoga empowerment .
If you only hear the name of Medicine uddha and practice the sadhana, you can overcome 404 diseases . One can also overcome punishment , fear, stinginess and rebirth among hungry ghosts etc. In Tibet in Lhasa, before the choerten at Jokhang temple practitioners perform Medicine Buddha puja for deceased , helping deceased not to be reborn in lower realms .

Rinpoche said : We pray to the Lama with Mandala offering , we pray for empowerment . In sky before us we see Medicine Buddha of deep blue light . The we go for refure to Medicine Buddha , with our full devotion . Medicine Buddha represent Three Jewels of refuge (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha ). Medicine Buddha dissolves into Light and into us . We see our environment as Pure land of Buddha of Medicine . The Vase and the torma are manifestations of Medicine Buddha . We see ourselves as cmpletely empty. From voindess appears the Throne wih eight elephants,lotus with sun and moon disc . On t appears blue syllable HUM which transforms into deep blue light of Medicine Buddha . In his right hand he holds Arura plant blossoming and with fruit . In his left hnd he holds the bowl with nectar .
Medicine Buddha has white OM on the forehead , red AH on the throat and blue HUM in the heart . All these syllables shine lights . We are united with Wisdom being Medicine Buddha till our enlightenment .

4. We offer torma to Medicine Buddha and to his eight manifestations. From torma shine white Light like moonlight to our forehead , purifying us of all impurtes (Rinpoche recites mantra of Medicine Buddha). This is empowernet of Body , enabling us to practice develoment stage of sadhana and to realise Nirmanakaya .
5. Purification of Speech : red light like the sunlight shines from the torma to our throat, purifying our speech/energy . Tis is secret initiation of speecg ; we can recite mantra of Medicine Buddha and realise Sambhogakaya .
6. Purifiction of mind : dark blue light shine from the heart of Medicine Budha and purifies our mind/cosciousness . This is emowerment of Mind ; we can practice completion stage of sadhana and realise Dharmakaya.
7. All three lights shine from Medicine Buddha like a Rainbow, entering our navel chakra. This empowerment gives us potential for Svabhavika kaya (i.e. Essence dimension).
From the torma and from the heart of Medicine Buddha shine five Lights to Pure land of Medicine Buddha . Limitless Medicine Buddhas appear with mantras , arura plants and bowl with nectars. All these rain on us with blessings . Thus we receive blessings .
Then we receive trasnmission of mantra, seeing blossom in our hands, as offering . From the heart of Medicine Buddha shine blue light forming blue chain to our heart , circling blue HUM in our heart . Mantra turns three times around syllable HUM. We put blossom on our head . We also promisse to practice Medicine Buddha 108, 21 or at least 7 times (short prayer o Medicine Buddha). .

To express our gratitude of receiving this precious empowerment we offer the mandala and then we dedicate the merit . At the end we sing the Bodhicitta prayer .

Afterword : Lho usang Rinpoche invited Mangala Konchok Norbu ad myself to be present at Mahakala Puja which he and three monks from his monastery practiced after Madicine Buddha empowerment . It was very special occasion to see very advanced Buddhist practitioners reciting Mahakala puja with great ease and concentration .
