Who Am I?
My name is Larry McDaniel and I am from Oakland, CA. Currently, I am an undergraduate student studying Sociology and Education at UC Berkeley. My educational career has been one marked with many economic and social hardships. From living without gas and electricity for over a year, to overcoming remedial community college classes, to experiencing extended periods of time without adequate food, there have been many barriers to overcome as I pursue higher education.
Despite this, I have just graduated from UC Berkeley with Highest Honors. As a potential first generation graduate student of color, I am now faced with new barriers--the cost of preparing for and applying to graduate school. Ahead of me are the costs of: GRE preparation courses, the GRE exam itself, application fees for 12 schools, transcript delivery, visiting schools, and just the cost of post grad life.
My Grad School Aspirations
I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Education. I want to conduct research on how the current mission and formation of the U.S. public school system functions as a mechanism for the reproduction of social and economic inequalities for historically marganizled youth. It is my goal to use my work, and position within the academy, to push for educational policy change and social justice. It is also my goal to be an advocate for diversity in the academy and use my positionality within it to encourage underserved and underrepresented minority youth to pursue higher education.

In short, I have big dreams and a little amount of money to work with. I normally would attack such hurdles on my own, but I have exhausted many of my resources.
