The Aurora University Spartan baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to the University of Chicago on senior day on Sunday, April 26. AU lost 3-1 (8 innings) and 16-1.
In game one the fans in attendance got free baseball as the game went into extra innings. AU fell behind 1-0 in the first as Spartan starter
Tyler Findlay surrendered three of the only seven hits he would give up in the game. The AU bats knotted the game back up in the fourth inning as they took advantage of two hit batsmen to plate a run with
Dillon Popovich scoring on a
Cale Sparks single.
AU left at least one runner on in the final three innings and as the game went into extras, Chicago capitalized on Spartan walks. With one out and runners on second and third, Findlay intentionally walked a Maroon to load the bases for relief pitcher
Aron Okamoto. Okamoto walked the first batter he faced and then after a sac fly for the third run, he walked another Maroon before ending the inning with a fly out. AU managed a single from Mike Chervin in the bottom of the eighth but could not string anything together to complete a comeback.
Game two was all Chicago as they scored runs in four of the seven innings while adding 20 hits against Spartan pitchers. The lone AU run in the 16-1 loss came in the fifth inning with
Harry Vickers leading off with a single and eventually scored courtesy of a balk.
Henry Erickson was the losing pitcher as four Spartans combined to allow the 16 runs and 20 hits on the bump.
With the losses, AU is now 19-17 overall and 8-8 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan baseball team comes on
Monday, April 27, 2015 when they host Rockford University. Game one is set for 4:00 p.m. at Solfisburg Park in Aurora, Illinois.
