Guwahati: An Assam Police lance naik, Jogen Nath, shot dead his wife Joba on Monday and later killed himself.
The incident occurred in the Madhyam Khanda area of the city, located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra.
Nath fired at least three rounds from his service carbine (sterling submachine gun) on his wife who died on the spot.
"At around 4am on Monday, we heard gunfire.
When we came out, we saw Nath sitting outside his house. He told us that he had killed Joba. Then he took some flowers and paid homage to her body before locking himself inside the room," said a relative.
Locals alerted police who reached the spot and asked Nath to surrender.
"A few minutes later, gunshots were heard again. This time, Nath had killed himself," said a policeman.
Families of both the deceased blamed each other for the deaths. Joba's family members said she was staying at her parental home due to atrocities by her in-laws. Nath's relatives, however, blamed Joba for the marital discord.

The couple were married for 10 years and are survived by their nine-year-old daughter.
Kamrup district SP RA Hazarika said, "Nath was engaged in providing security to Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) executive member Ganesh Kachari. On Sunday, he came to the city with the leader. He went to his in-laws' place in north Guwahati in the evening."
Police found a blood-stained suicide note from the spot. Sources said the letter has been sent for forensic tests.
"Due to the bloodstains, the note can't be read. From the little that could be gleaned from it, Nath seemed upset with his family life," police sources said.
The service firearm was seized. At least seven bullet shells were found on the spot.
