GSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEKROME, Ga. – Almost a year to the day after being named the program's first conference freshman of the week honors, quarterback
Aaron Bryant has become Shorter's first-ever top offensive player of the week.
Thanks to a four-touchdown performance that tied a school record and helped the Hawks hand the Mississippi College Choctaws a 42-23 Gulf South Conference defeat Saturday night, Bryant has been named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week.
Bryant becomes the second Shorter player to earn conference honors this season, joining linebacker
Zach Butts, who was named the GSC Defensive Player of the Week in Week 3, and is the first Hawk to receive two conference weekly recognitions having garnered GSC Freshman of the Week laurels almost a year to the day in 2014 against the same opponent, Mississippi College.
Last weekend against the Choctaws, the sophomore from Landrum, S.C., became the seventh player in Shorter history to score four touchdowns in a game when he scored on runs of 4, 37, 1 and 7 yards as the Hawks rolled to their first GSC win of the season and second straight victory.
His touchdown total – it's the most in a single game this season – made him the 18th player in GSC history to run for at least four TDs in a game and the 20th player to rack up at least 24 points.
Bryant closed out the game that evened the Hawks' overall record to 2-2 rushing for 99 yards on a game-high 17 carries and added 51 more yards through the air as he completed 4-of-6 passes for 51 yards. He leads the Hawks in total offense with 439 yards, 144 on the ground and 295 in the air.
Against the Choctaws, the Hawks rolled up 300 yards on the ground for the second week in a row with junior fullback
B.J. McCoy rushing for game-high 117 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore fullback
Aki Coles gave Shorter its fifth offensive touchdown, while senior All-American safety
Jordan Shaw gave the Hawks' defense its first TD of the season when he scooped up a fumble and raced 61 yards into the end zone.
Delta State defensive back Jon Knox earned the GSC Defensive Player of the Week nod, Florida Tech's Gary Holmes was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week and West Alabama quarterback Harry Satterwhite was named the Freshman Player of the Week.
The Hawks will turn their attention to an even bigger GSC challenge this Saturday when they host No. 5-ranked Delta State for a 1:30 p.m. kick-0ff at Barron Stadium in Shorter's Homecoming game.
